DVD-R vs DVD+R & Double Layer

Post by mvpfrank »

Over the past 10 years or so I've used DVD-R's exclusively for all my needs without issue. Way back when if you recall DVD+R's had many compatibility issues with DVD Players. Now that I've got a Karat for my video needs this compatibility question comes up again. It seems Double Layer DVD's are only available in the +R'S. I've been told the incompatibility issues with the +R's & DVD Players is almost non existent now as it was 10 years ago.

So what are most videographers giving to their customers now? Has the incompatibility issue disappeared now? Comments Please.

I have used DVD+R almost exclusively fro 20 years. Compatibility problems have been very rare. I'd say in the last 10 years I had 1 or 2 issues, which came down to the brand or age of their DVD player. I've only used DVD+R DL a few times but never had a problem. ALso I've been a pretty loyal fan of the Verbatim brand discs.

No issues for the few times I used double layer discs...that is in my Linux system.

How many people are still using them I wonder. I've never had the need to use dual layer discs.

Mostly I've used them for data files of analogue material. A 2 hour VHS tape will fit on a single layer DVD but not something like a .mp4 at high bit rate or an.avi.

Probably long lectures would work with dual layer. Also, lossless large files like MPEG-2 TS or .MT2 lossless.

Sometimes they are used to make the film longer than the standard 4.7Gb (with additional black etc) so that when a client tries to copy it they can't as it states that the data is too big to fit on the target media.

This only affects customers who don't know what they are doing but can offer a little piece of protection from the school play brigade.
