Synch 30 fps with 29.97 fps

Post by Christopher6206 »

Shot an event with 3 cameras. 2 cameras were set at 30fps, which is actually 29.97 fps. 3rd camera set at 30fps and is true 30fps. So the cameras won't sync up. I used handbrake to convert the true 30fps to 29.97 fps and was going to re try. I was expecting the new clips to be shorter than the originals. My understanding is that for the conversion to work, 1 frame for every 33 will be removed. It doesn't make much sense to me that they would be shorter, the footage covers the same amount of time. But it turns out the converted clips are 1 frame longer than the originals and they don't synch up with each other. It's a 24 minute program and this camera made a new file every 3min and 24 frames. The new files are 3 min and 25 frames. And when you put them next to each other in the storyboard, the end of the first does not match with the beginning of the next. There is a second where the beginning of the next clip repeats the end of the last clip. The Karat imported them individually instead of as one long clip (like it did for the original 30fps file) Makes no sense.

I'm going to try and fix that last problem I mentioned but I want to know what the best (free) program is for solving this conversion problem. I did look at the import settings for my Karat and it imports both 30 fps and 29.97 fps into a 30fps project with "formats match, no adaptation needed" Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Update, trimming each new converted clip from its in point by 29 frames fixed the matching of clips problem. My audio is still not quite in sync, but it is out of sync by the same amount throughout the program so I just need to re adjust the start point on the converted clips by a little and I should be good to go. But I'd still like to hear thoughts on the matter from anyone who has them. thanks.

If your signature is correct, your Bogart 10.1 software is outdated since September 2018. Image Please update to the current state (for free) and try again:
  • 2018-05-14 Bogart 5.21 / 6.17 / 7.15 / 8.12 / 9.7 / 10.1

  • 2018-12-12 Bogart 5.23 / 6.19 / 7.17 / 8.14 / 9.9 / 10.3 / 11.0

DOWNLOAD of current NTSC version for Casablanca-3 :!:

A feedback if that solved the problem would be nice. Image

By the way... if the camcorder split scenes at 2 GB or 4 GB file size, Bogart will recognize that and try to put those clips together. If you used any converter software, Bogart can't recognize that any more. In the import menu, "combine files to one scene" may(!) also help. But it would be better if the converter had an option to join those broken parts. Otherwise there will always be some kind of broken cut-point. If "show Expert menu" is aktive, you can also try to shut off "adjust frame rate". Then each frame is read as it has been recorded by the camera. But this is only possible without audio. You might need to split the audio from the already imported material (Edit / Special / Scene->Sample) and us that in the AudioMix.

I have downloaded the latest software. Currently I'm running Bogart 10.3. I will install soon. But I've gotten it to work the way it is so I'm not going to install the new OS and start over. No time for that. But I appreciate your attention to this. Thanks.

Image No need to start over... just always use the latest versions from the manufacturer to fix problems that you have not run into yet. Image
  • Time for installing new software update... ~3 minutes Image
  • Time to fix a problem that occurred because of outdated software... days or weeks... depending on the last backup. Image
And don't forget that more projects are lost because of hard-drive failure than any software problem. So if you have no time.. do regular backups more often, instead of loosing all data on the drive within the second the drive may fail.
