Out of Loop

I have been out of the Cassie loop for a few months. Heading to Dallas to hopefully buy a unit for myself. I lost my job and the Cassie that I used for editing. Is Beachy still with us? Is Tim K. still a UPS big shot? Is the mouth of the south still alive and well? [Don Simmons]

Hi Mike,

I was up in your neighborhood this summer, stayed at the White Lace Inn. Went to Green Bay, for a visit and then headed to Sturgeon Bay to hike. I looked up your name in the phone book hoping to get to see or talk with you. But I couldn't recall how you name was spelled. Still stuggling with looking for something to replace your job up there. Maybe with the emphasis on education lately, they might be calling you back to the school district. Hang in there buddy, who knows, maybe something will come along.

I'm not doing much better myself, but that's OK because I'm retired. Don't even do any professional sports camera work anymore. Baseball, Basketball is boring, football is a lot of hard work and long hours, but I still love to shoot hockey and soccer, but gave that up also.

Hi Mike,

I'd say there are a lot of us still here, just not so active on the board or Cassie Tips List as we used to be. Now and then we hear from some of our friends from England, but its been a while since I've seen posts from Derek Smith, Rev. Bob, and Ian. Hopefully they are all doing well. Don Simmons is alive and well.

Hope you find the editor you're looking for down in Texas this week :!:

Hi Mike
As Craig points out, I have not been as active on the BB recently, but I still log on almost daily to see what is going on.

My involvement, or lack of it, is not through lack of interest but mainly due to the change in the nature of the business. In the early days, we all had similar generation machines and the issues where primarily editing techniques, i.e. how to get the effects we wanted with the relatively limited programs. This was and still is my comfort zone.

The emphasis, quite naturally, with the introduction of new technology has changed and whilst this is good, I find I have less to contribute, although when I feel I can I still jump in.

There is a Yorkshire saying (my part of the UK), “If thy has nowt sensible to say, then keep thy gob shut”. To translate for those who don’t speak Yorkshire, “If one has nothing sensible to talk about, then please keep ones mouth closed.”

Good to see your back again Mike.

Ian

Gee, some folks have long memories (noting my absence from the BB in recent times!) Son No.3 lives by himself in Scotland, and has had a whole year of health problems, failures to diagnose fully, acting on "red herrings" before confirming the appropriateness of such actions, then, after final correct diagnosis at about 12 months in, waiting for an appointment with the surgeon who would deal with the situation. However, the "Great Physician" up above intervened, my son had to undergo emergency surgery under a different doctor, this time successfully. My wife and I had to make several prolonged and unscheduled trips from London to Scotland to care for him, and eventually receive his home-coming from yet another hospital (the third within those 12 months!) then once he'd recovered sufficient strength to drive himself south to the parental nesting site, play the role of "hosts" rather than "nurses". During all this my wife has had increasing pain and disability in her neck, back and shoulders. She is now awaiting a date for major surgery to the right shoulder by the only specialist able to undertake the complex procedure he feels can help. Whilst we were on our way to Scotland for our son's emergency surgery, my wife's sister was knocked down by a car near her home in the Midlands, and was maintained in "not-quite-life" for two days before withdrawal of support etc. As you may appreciate, my "new toy" - my Kron - has had to languish in virtual shutdown for months at a stretch. However, it's finally back in service to edit various films shot by non-technical friends, and awaiting my first chance to try out a replacement camcorder - after dropping its 4-years-old predecessor. Now at the grand old age of three quarters of a century, and officially ten years into "retirement" - I'm desperately trying to master a new word in my personal vocabulary. Turns out "NO" is the hardest linguistic task I've set myself to date (in varying degrees of proficiency in seven European languages!) Funeral Directors are some of the most persistent ignorers of my "Out to Grass" status!

Now that I'm back editing again, stand by for the occasional question appearing above my signature! Regards to all you technical guys out there in Cassieland.

Hi Mike,

Yeah, still around somewhat, sorry to hear about the job.

I retired from UPS almost three full years ago and have been a Teamster Business Agent since then (not ready to just retire yet).

In fact, my new career has gotten so busy that I decided to park my video business indefinitely (wedding business was down anyway) and I did sell my Cassie Gen2 and Gen3 editors.

I plan to continue to visit the BB and I plan to make Jim Meeker's March Get Together next year, but my active shooting and editing commercially is shut down for now.

Good luck in your new business and as mentioned on the other thread I think you should use the name you suggested.
