Canon Legria HF R205

Post by Charles »

Thinking about a new camera nothing fancy and budget price have noticed over the last year or so Canon cameras seem to have no problems with Bogart so question is has anyone used this model with Bogart and what else would i require to import footage

Nora Lot - but a card reader (USB 2) would make life so much easier.

I've got an older HF100 and it works really well and the quality is excellent !

Got mine from the pound shop . . . it was £1

Looks like a USB stick and only takes SD cards - which is fine as that's all I needed.

Make sure the cards you buy are 'fast' enough and avoid the cheap ones - it's a false economy, and don't buy the SDXC cards - Cassie don't like them yet

Hi Charles,

I am very partial to Sony cameras. I would check out the new Sony HXR-NX30.

Just released from NAB.

It has a built in video projector and other unique features. It cost about $2,500.

Also, if your budget allows, go for the Sony PMW-EX1R. This is my main work horse camera for my business.

Both camera codecs work well with Bogart.

Thanks Joel but way over my budget but will have a look at the lower end, reason for the choice of Canon was the compatiliblty they seem to have with Bogart brand of choice would be Panasonic but they seem to have problems with Bogart.

I don't film for payment but having had a blue ray burner in my S3000 thought it was about time i gave HD a try

No problems with my Panasonic. Be careful of the new SONY. I an not a big fan of the 1/2.7 chip. Too many pixels crammed into a chip results in poor lighting indoors.

Thanks Lou at a guess I’m presuming your Panasonic will be one of the top end models any experience of the low end models like the HC – V1000EB-K or the V500 reason for the shift to Panasonic apart from brand of choice is a few reviews on the Canon HF R205 quote very poor battery life as low as 40 minutes.

Hello Charles,
For what it's worth, I have a Panasonic HDC-SD700. Bought it about 18 months ago, and it works really well - communicates with a Cassie S4100 and Bogart with absolutely no problems at all (via a USB connection).
I think it has now been superseded by the HDC-SD900, but the kit is pretty similar. It takes good video, it has a viewfinder as well as a flip-out screen, and you can attach filters (UV, Polarising, etc) to its front. It has manual focus control (but the auto is excellent) and it can also record in 1080/50p if you want to - I don't, because I use Twixtor quite a lot, and Twixtor doesn't seem to operate if your footage is progressive.
The latest version is about GBP 780 (which I think is about USD 1200). The SDC-700 is still available, and might cost you about USD 600.
Cheers,
Graham
