Another Bogart 2.3c caution: HDV to DV internal downconvert

Post by TimKennelly »

Yesterday I completed another HDV Project, the first one using Bogart SE 2
3c and authored/burned an SD DVD.

The results were lousy with very evident motion "shimmering" artifacts.

This surprised me as I had burned HDV Project to SD DVD with 2.1e with great
results.

So I did a manual HDV to DV downconvert by using the Clipboard to transfer
footage to an 16:9 SD Project.

Looking at the results showed the same motion artifact, albeit not as
prominently, but I was sure the further MPEG2 compression that rendering to
SD DVD requires would make the problem worse and more obvious and it most
certainly did.

To say I was very unhappy was an understatement.

I tried exporting the HDV Project out to HDV tape via firewire and then back
in letting my cam do the HDV to SD downconvert live as it was inputting and
then authored and burned an SD DVD.

That DVD looks great.

So I thought I'd save some of you some time and heartburn.

Anyone can check and verify this for themselves by just internally
downconverting a little HDV footage with motion (people's heads in motion
really shows it).

So I advise those currently editing HDV and making SD DVDs on Bogart SE 2.3c
to use the out to HDV tape and back in again letting the cam do the
downconvert until this is addressed.

I have reported this bug to MSUS and I expect they will address it with the
next upgrade version.

To be clear, this only effects internal downconverting HDV to DV as HDV
edited work burns to the Blu-ray AVCHD DVD format with excellent results and
DV footage and pre-downconverted HDV to DV footage works well with 2.3c in
my experience so far.

The good news, Jörg has already responded that this bug has been replicated and fixed and will be in the next upgrade version.

There are quite a few individuals on this forum that are helpful and quick with the right response. Tim, Lou, Ian, Chet, Cris, Jim Meeker and some I can't think of off-hand that are extremely valuable to this forum. Without their help a lot of us would be dead in the water with our ship slowly sinking.

I get up early in the morning to beat my wife to the computer to see what's happening. I check this site daily to see if there is something that would pertian to a problem I have, and I always pick up some helpful usefull tips. Keep up the great work guys' although it's not said, or mentioned, some of us really need your advice

Bob and Ron,

Thank you for the kind words and we all help each other and that is what makes this the friendliest site on the net as Jim always says.

Oh and Ron, I don't want to be linked to any reason for you to be construed as beating your wife. ;) LOL

Hi Tim

The same internal downconvert problem happens here in Australia (PAL) it also has been addressed to Marcosystems by our distributor. So it is not only in NTSC it is globally and I am sure they are working on it in Germany.

For now, just export a HDV project to tape.

.Import the HDV material BACK to a SD Project using the downconvert function of your camera or deck.

.Split the downconverted material for chapters

.Proceed as usual with ARABESK.

You may also want to make this SOP for a faster process for future projects.

This is a reported issue.

Jeanton,

Good to know it is a PAL bug as well as someone had asked me and I did not know.

As mentioned, Jörg has already responded and stated they have "fixed" so it is just a matter of getting it into another version update.

Lou, I don't have AVCHD cams, but I know you do, can you go out to them firewire and back and can they live downconvert to use this work around that works for HDV or is there another way such as Media Manager as an acceptable workaround for AVCHD users?

I picked a short HD scene for clipboard and opened for downconverting in 16:9 SD project.
The downconvert looks very good absolutely no artifacts in moving objects. :D
Maybe it has to do with the date of OS downloading.
I did my download on 5. July but it was avilable on 1.July.
Maybe I caught a "Fixed" version?
This could be the only reason for the different reactions in downconverting.

I must admit to being rather disappointed too.

I thought that the quality had gone up previously when transferring directly into Arabesk for an SD DVD from an HD project.

However this, to me, appears to have slid a little with this latest version.

Good news that a fix is ready and waiting.

A lot of people are filming in HD, for future editing, but still need to produce standard DVD's for their customers / friends etc.
