Close Lightning Strike

Post by JBrooks »

I was out shooting this storm on June 12, 2009 and I got lucky and captured a VERY close lightning strike in Parker county near Weatherford, TX. Shot in HD with the Sony EX1 XDCAM Camera.

Shocking! ;)

Very cool Joel.
My mom always told me that happiness was the key to life.
At school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I said “happy" and they told me I didn’t understand the question.
I told them they didn’t understand life.

It looks great! How did you have the exposure set? Also, did you leave the audio in automatic or did you dial it way down?

Thats cool Joel. Good shot. I was shooting a training video years ago for an electric utility, and they wanted to get a shot of a set of sub station switches opening under load. We set me up in a bucket truck probably 40 or 50 feet away from the switch up level with it, and I rolled the camera, gave them the thumbs up and their service man opened the switch. An arc came off that thing and followed it for 15 feet and made a boom you wouldn't believe. I was expecting it and it startled me. I had unpluged my mic and I was wearing hearing protection. When I went to edit the audio of the switch opening was on the tape. I'll never understand how that happened.
Joel do you work for the station or do you chase storms? If I was younger, I'd like to do that I think. Bob...

Yes, I work part time for the ABC news affiliate in Dallas. I provide footage for them regarding weather and other news interest content.

I also shot the studio camera shot sequences (vertical pedestal movements) as I was working the day this video aired. I edited the footage on my Renommee Plus.
I was in the auto audio gain mode and the shutter turned off as to minimize the rolling shutter. The iris was open. No gain.

Thanks for the comments guys.
