Does anyone know how expensive a ftp site is? Also can an ftp site be used to deliver pay per view? Thanks Bob....

FTP is the acronym for File Transfer Protocol. FTP is used to transfer (usually larger) data/computer files from one computer to another computer using the internet. For example - I use FTP to send my DVD Tutorial artwork to the printers at CAM Audio in Texas, I take the large sized graphics file (created in Adobe Photoshop Elements) and upload that from my computer to an online file server (I use an Apple service called . but you folks who have their own web sites likely have FTP space available from their provider). Then I share the password and file name with Seth Hampton at CAM Audio - he logs in on his computer, locates this file and downloads to his computer.
This can be done with all kinds of files like video, audio, data, etc.

FTP is not used to host or provide for streaming video or Pay Per View - rather it transfers the raw file from one spot to another.

Another increasingly popular service is the use of FTP providers that streamline this process for you --- I have used them and find them quite useful... they allow you to upload a file to their server and will then send an email for you to the recipient who follows a simple instruction to download the file/s.

Here is a link with more info on FTP technology: http://www.techterms.com/definition/ftp

Two of the popular choices are https://www.yousendit.com/ and http://www.sizablesend.com/
You will find these have a paid version but their free version is fine for most folks' needs.

Hope that helps!

Chet

Thanks Chet, that gives me a better understanding of FTP. Would that be a good place for pay per view where I could give the cust a pass word and only they could download the file? Thanks Bob...

I upload digital photos to my clients, along with other information having to do with the topic of the pics. Its where I turn in my work to my clients, because they can take a lot of files in, including large pdf's of scanned docs. Works very well.

Hmm, first let me clarify your question Bob -- do you wish to allow the customer to download the video/file sot they can have it on their computer, or rather to view it on their computer after inputting a password given by you.

I have been investigating this kind of service a little bit this past year to see what was out there -- apart from the video hosting website there is the consideration of whether you are going to provide the password manually (directly from you after direct contact) or if you wish to set-up an automated situation where the customer enters payment and then automatically receives password.

Some common websites, like Vimeo, allow the use of passwords for 'protected' or 'private' videos but that does not control PPV, or the number of times an individual would have access to the video (as common PPV set-ups would).

Here are some of the online services I have come across (no direct experience with any of them so this is not a personal recommendation, only providing the links for others to review)
