Sony HVR-Z1U questions

Post by foreveryoung »

I am shooting a live music video with 4 Sony HVR-Z1U cameras in PAL 1080/50i. Can I record HDV on Standard MiniDV tapes? Also in a live concert setting can anyone advise me on the best camera settings, shutter, apt, gain, white balance etc.. Lastly, how accurate is the Free Run Time Code as an External Sync Substitute for HVR-Z1U Multi-Camera Shoots? I would appreciate any advice; this is my first time using these cameras
Thanks
Ken

Ken,

I saw the same post on the WEVA site, I assume it was yours?

This is a very tough question. Lighting and color balance are a challenge due to the ever-changing conditions.

If you want a special effect, you can lower your shutter to less than 60. As for a film look? Maybe 24 P with the Z-1? That's a matter of taste.

If you have light and dark areas, I highly recommend MANUAL mode so as to adjust the iris before the GAIN pops-up causing grain. I would set the gain to ONE setting you feel does not show grain and at the same time, utilize the MANUAL IRIS and ZEBRA stripes to avoid overexposure. The manual IRIS is also necessary when there is a BACKLIT situation. White Balance may be tough due to changing colors and color temperature. You MAY have to go AUTO WB for this. However, if you can WHITE BALANCE prior to the actual stage show, do so with a TRUE white Blance card and then LOCK in that setting on the Z-1.

The biggest challenge is probably going to be audio and overmodualtion.

Lastly, make sure you Zero-out the time code and all will be OK.
