Cause of Title glitches in HD project--Sync error?
Still working on the short HDV project in the RENO+ and getting the Unrecoverable Error message after attempting the HDV render (finish) process of ANY titled segment. This is NOT, apparently, caused by using scene inserts in my timeline, because I have since removed them all and then attempted titling again --- with the same unwelcome result.
Possible culprit : One scene - and ONLY one - in the original bin had an audio sync error in which the camera audio track was 6 frames ahead of the video. I had forgotten about it (chalked it off as a fluke) and corrected it by way of SCENE>SAMPLE--- AUDIO MIX> RANGE>POSITION> retard 6 frames.) But maybe it was a Trojan Horse of sorts...
QUESTION: IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS SEEMINGLY ISOLATED ERROR CREATED THE TITLE GLITCH IN OTHER AREAS OF THE TIMELINE?
Any ideas?

Bob.....make an entire scene of the SB. ADD the scene to your scene bin. Open IP and add NOP and render to same. Place back on your SB.
See if this corrects your problem.

Re: Cause of Title glitches in HD project--Sync error?
Hey Lou,
Thanks for the reminder that NOP is a successful problem-solver in many instances... but not this one. I'm baffled, because I've successfully rendered HDV projects before this, adding transitions (on a limited basis) and titles.
I'm glad you answered because you are a Canon XH A-1 guy (although you've apparently ungraded in that area as well). The question remains as to whether the Audio Sync error that I described is a (God-forbid) record-head tracking error in the Canon or just a data-crunching error in the Reno +.
Anybody else can chime in with thoughts - even if you're going to scare me. I can take it. I think.

HUMMM......this is a challenge.
Are you using the HV-20 as the playback deck? Camera as the playback deck?
Either way, try to reverse what you did. Try the tape in both cameras to isolate a head pitch problem.
I have to think this one out. How is the audio set in the XH menu?

Re: Cause of Title glitches in HD project--Sync error?
Thanks for the switch-camera idea, Lou. I tried using the HV-20 instead of the XH A1 for loading into the RENO+ and the results were the same. Audio is out of sync for only a 2-minute interval in the RENO+. Strangely, the other sections (where the narrator is on-camera) on the same tape are perfect. The definitive glitch is, again, during ANY place in the storyboard where titles have been added and created: They will not "Finish". Instead it crashes and restarts. NOTE: When viewed in monitor via Component Outs from XH A1 or HV-20 the audio is in sync throughout.
Note: Another tape recently recorded in the XH A1 produces NO GLITCHES of either kind. Audio on the "glitch tape" was XLR-ON using Sennheiser Lav mic and db attenuation ON with Channel 1 input split to Ch 1 + Ch 2. Will attempt duplication with new tape tomorrow. Obviously do NOT want to see the same results.
I'll post results when I can....

Re: Cause of Title glitches in HD project--Sync error?
I throw this out for your consideration only. I use a Reno Plus as my main editing machines. S4000 Pro still dormant on the shelf. (Anxious for new OS 4.XX to be released.) I had numerous audio sync problems using OS 8.XX and Arabesk 4.XX with Reno Plus. Audio problems were often present in the original scene, story board and when there were no problems there, problems were present on burned DVDs. When the storyboard was ok, but there were audio sync problems on longer films requiring compression, I found that reduced video quality kept the audio in sync while compressing the audio caused problems. My permanent work around was to revert back to OS 6.3 and Arabesk 3.XX. No problems since. YMMV

Re: Cause of Title glitches in HD project--Sync error?
Hey Bob Foster, interesting correlation because I'm using OS 8.xx and Arabesk 4.xx And your mention of compression is a key element that I had suspected because the unrecoverable glitch occurs when (I believe) some compression is underway. Specifically, during the conversion processes that are needed when making a scene with a title or Finishing the entire project in HDV.
For Lou (and anyone else interested), I did several experiments:
1) Using the same Canon XH A1, I recorded new footage on the "glitch tape" (on a virgin area) and new footage on another tape. Neither of these produced problems when loaded into a new HDV project. However.... And this is a WEIRD - yet CONSISTENT - result....
2) When loading a title that was created and archived previously within the "glitch project", the same error occured in the new project with new footage.
Wow! I am to conclude that some kind of "virus" came into the RENO+ from the earlier tape footage and somehow "wormed" its way onto the hard drive so it could replicate and mutate on another sector???? Sounds like a spy-tech novel. Scary.
I'm going to delete any and all titles I archived during the "glitch project" and then reboot. And - I'm going to conclude with about 98% certainty that there is nothing mafunctioning in my beloved Canon XH A1.

Hello,
There have been cases where a particular Font was corrupted would cause a problem. You might just for the fun of it, try several different fonts and see if they also cause the problem......or is one font the culprit?
Also be sure that the fonts you are working with are not marked in the list with a dot that says it isn't activated.

Re: Cause of Title glitches in HD project--Sync error?
Thanks, Jim, for the suggestion that a font may be corrupted... but that was not it. Nor was it a corrupted Title Effect. I have found the a solution and I am happily using titles in HD projects again - INCLUDING in the "glitch-project" ...
Strangely, the bug was "living" within the titles created and archived within the "glitch-project." Once I deleted those particular archives and re-booted... the problem went away. I still have a short scene in that project that plays with audio out of sync, but the unrecoverable error condition has been eradicated.
I'm may still be a little baffled as to how the glitch originated, but I can safely say that retracing your steps is always a viable element in our version of the Scientific Method.
Thanks!
