Unlike the indestructible VHS machine, HD discs may also be incompatible in a player due to the version of firmware currently in the machine. A "good" player in the store may have a later version firmware than the potential customer's same model unit. Later versions of firmware can usually be downloaded if you don't mind the extra hassle. Good Idea Bob, I was thinking about that. Buy them a Bluray player that works with the disc I burned. They can't be that expensive. After all it is a tax write-off.

Yeah, we are at the same point and circumstance that we were with early DVD technology where many DVD players were incompatible with burned DVDs.
Any Blu-ray burner can burn regular DVDs so no, you don't have to re-install the DVD burner to burn DVDs.

That''s great news, I can burn a regualr DVD with a Blue Ray burner. That was one of the reasons I hesitant to buy and install a blue-ray burner in my unit, in the first place. With all the information from everyone, I fell much more comfortable with the purchase of the HD camera and editing in HD.

I upgraded (installed) the blu-ray burner myself in one of my S4000Pro units when I owned them.
Even so, I burned tons more DVD than Blu-ray on the unit as few wanted to pay the upgrade cost for the Blu-ray.
Enough did to justify the Blu-ray burner purchase though.

I have a Blu Ray burner installed in my S4100. I shoot video with a Canon HDV cam. I have found that AVCHD DVD discs look as good on my SIM2 Lumis projector ( 120" diagonal screen ) as do Blu Rays, but the AVCHD DVD disks so far have played in all my friends different B R players!! My Blu Ray disks only play in my OPPO B R player. Just FYI.
