Glitches in HD Video

Hi all-

I have some footage captured on a Canon HG20- a lower end 1 chip HD cam- and upon uploading to the S4000, there is an obvious sync issue with audio/video. In addition, some glitches/artifacts are apparent- typically with motion- that are not apparent at all while watching feedback on the camera monitor.

My questions are:

1) I know I can manually correct the audio/video sync issue, but my objective is not just to solve the issue, it's to understand why is it happening in the first place? The HG20 is AVCHD, not sure if that is causing issues or not. I currently have the 2.3d Bogart OS. HAs anyone else experienced this problem?

2) I am pretty sure that with all HD cams, probably the lower end models in particular like the one I shot footage on, there may be glitches/artifacts with motion. But my objective is to ensure that the glitches/artifacts are not the product of the S4000 or the manner in which I have uploaded footage (or anything else I may not be thinking of). Is it logical that the footage is flawless on the camera monitor and problematic upon uploading to the S4000? If not, then I want to eliminate the problem before I export to tape or DVD. And the amount of motion is minimal in which the artifacts appear. I would have to believe if the camera is THAT sensitive to motion that I would have read about it in reviews of the camera online which do not cite such a shortcoming. The monitor in which I edit on is NOT HD - in other words, my connection from the S4000 to the monitor is not DVI/DVI or DVI/HDMI. This wouldn't result in seeing glitches/artifacts on screen, would it? I wouldn't think so, but I'm trying to think of any reason why the footage is flawless on the camera and glitchy/artifacty after uploading to the S4000. And I would be surprised if it can entirely be attributed to camera motion, but I could be wrong.

3) I uploaded footage from the camera to the S4000 via a USB port simply b/c this particular camera has no firewire connection. USB will preserve HD quality, correct? Like firewire, there should be no degradation in quality, correct?

4) I am pretty sure I know the answer to this one, but just want to confirm: if I upload AVCHD footage to the S4000, can I then export it to miniDV tape?

I have the HFS-10 AVCHD camera and do not have glitches. The quality is pristine and many people think it is my pro camera.

SO..... Check your settings. I have mine set to 24 mps. However, your camera is most likely set to a less setting. Set to the highest setting. Change your usb cable to isolate the problem. 2.3E fixed many of the AVCHD problems from the prior OS.

Lastly, the artifacting may be a combo of a low setting and the resolution of the chip PLUS compression.

YES...you can go out to tape in HDV and import back in either HD or SD to the 4000.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. 1/99 not bad. Batting about 0.010.

Anyway, you mention the camera settings as a possible culprit. The setting was at the highest quality level; per the manual it is the "MXP" mode, recorded in 1920 x 1080 resolution. But again, the fact that it looks perfecto when I play the footage directly through my camera and project it onto the TV tells me it is a S4000 related issue (or as we both mentioned, maybe the USB cable).

I will load up 2.3E asap, hopefully that solves it. The upgrade to 2.3d seemed to fix the audio/video sync issue I previously had with the same footage.

On a somewhat related topic, if I shoot 24 fps can the S4000 handle it? On another camera I own (Canon HV40), I shot in this mode and there appear to be gaps in the video/audio upon uploading into the S4000. My guess is perhaps 24 fps is not compatible with the S4000 yet?
