do you also have a real name?

Is your Solitaire running on PAL or NTSC?
The reason I ask is, I had a SolitairePlus and sold it.(PAL)
I remember still having some SmartMediaCards somewhere.
I said somewhere because I have to search for them.
If you are on PAL I could send one for keeping.
Not sure if there is one having SmartEdit System Software on it.
Waiting for your reply
It's running PAL, anyway I've found my original SmartMedia card, I'm trying to boot with that, thanks for your help!

Now if I insert the SmartMedia Card the installer starts but it says that there is no hard-disk and does not continue.

My Solitaire has two HDs (1 internal+1external in the front bay), also I've tried with a new one (tested in a PC and works ok), but still says that there is no hard disk.

May be a hd controller failure? Can I install a PCI IDE adapter?

Well, the internal is simply for mirror backup and restore.

The external, if you have tried more than one are you talking about in the same sled or not?

Have you checked the slim and quite delicate gold pins in the enclosure.

Sounds like one (or more) of them might have been bent which will cause a connection/recognition failure.

The Solitaire can be quite unforgiving if you use combinations of drives of different make and model.
For that reason, I normally recommend the internal drive be replaced with the same make and model drive as the one being used in the sled.
If you use two sled drives, then all three should be of the same make and model.

No mention has been made of the pin configuration of this new sled drive. It should be set to 'cable select' not master or slave.

If the pins are set that way and you are still unsuccessful, I would suggest you disconnect the internal drive and then try doing the install to the sled drive.
If that works, then your problem will be that your Solitaire does not like the combination of drive makes and models.

Presuming there is an active backup on your internal drive, you have one other option. Remove it, change the pin configuration from 'slave' to cable select' and then put it in the sled.
Then change the pins on your new drive to 'slave' and install it as the backup drive.
Then, if the Solitaire boots from the old backup drive, you should be able to backup to your new drive. This then, may be put back in the sled and it should boot (cable select).

Sorry this post has been so wordy, but it should give you some options that will lead to success.

Good luck.

First, thanks to ALL for your help!

Well, I really don't know why, but the Solitaire now is up and running with the old hard-disk.

I have SmartEdit 7 and DVD-Arabesk v4.1e, in my SmartMedia appears also HDBackup but when I try to install it a message says that I can't install that software. I've downloaded CD06 from Macrosystem.de but there is no HD-Backup for the solitaire, so how can I make a backup to the internal HD? I've see that I can make a backup to a firewire HD, CD or USB, but not internal HD.

The Solitaire has both a menu driven mirror back up process and a dedicated front button for that.

Are you saying it isn't working or you don't have the software to activate it?

Just use an All Software CD for the second.

When I use the front button the icon changes to a forbidden signal.

That could mean several things, a software corruption, a failure of the internal hard drive or a connection to the same coming disconnected or faulty.

I've installed a old HD with SmartEdit 4+HD Bakcup 1.0 and all seems works ok, front button, menu... but in my old disc with SmartEdit 7 I can't install HD-Backup 1.0/1.2, the problem is that I have my projects in that old HD.

It seems software corruption, is there any way to reinstall SmartEdit 7 without format my HD? Also I only have the serial number of my original SmartEdit 4, is there any way for extract my SmartEdit 7 serial for reinstall?

Your serial numbers are permanently installed in the system bios once input, not on the individual hard drives so that isn't a problem for you.

I don't know if you can do a non-destructive upgrade from SE4 to SE7, perhaps Chet would know.

I believe you could find out by initiating the OS install process and if it gives you the non-destructive option you should be good and if not, then obviously it is not available and you would want to back off by choosing No or left clicking, etc.

If you cannot do a non-destructive upgrade, you would need to finish your Projects or output your work to digital tape or Disk Transfer DVD for re-input after a full, destructive OS install.
