Suppose I had two 12 second scenes and I wanted to superimpose one over the other.

Not just a crossfade but a 12 second duration double exposure.

What I'm trying to do is combine two identical clips: one in color, the other with the 35mm "Film 2" processing.

Since "Film 2" won't do clips in color, I thought I could overlay the color scene to add color to the "film look" of the
35mm scene.

Any solution?

Sure, use the transition Double Exposure, set the fade to zero, duration to the entire Scene length.

Use Crossfade and set the percentage mix to your liking.

Exactly as Tim says, I use this procedure lots of times to create backgrounds for titles.
