I apologize in advance for using the expertise of the forum members for using ya'll as a user manual, but I've got an unholy time crunch and I'm not quickly finding what I need to do in the manual.

I just installed SE 6.2d on my Kron not five minutes ago, which bumps me into the realm of being able to upload Kron-burned DVDs, pull off the audio, and burn a CD. Unfortunately, I've got a project that requires this, oh, yesterday!



Can someone please give me the steps I need to take to:

1) Select and upload the 45 minute movie (just the audio) I want from a previously Kron-burned DVD that has two 45 minute movies on it.

2) Break the 45 minute audio track up into nine 5-minute chapters. It's important that they play "through" like a live concert album - ie, no pauses in between chapters. This is a lecture and there obviously can't be any pauses as we move from chapter to chapter. Not even those 1/4 second "zero" pauses. It has to be seamless while giving the CD player the ability to skip forward five minutes at a time.

3) Burn the project to a CD.


...if someone happens to be on the forum this late in the evening and you can tell me where I need to go in my Kron, I'll be very appreciative. The new OS is reasonably similar to the ancient system I was using, but there's just enough new stuff here to keep me rifling through the manual until the wee hours trying to find these steps I need.

ps. Also, does anyone have an estimate how long it takes to upload a DVD into a (year) 2000 or 2001 Kron? Does it load up faster than a movie would play?

You cannot feed in a DVD and strip out the audio direct, the import CD does not recognise a DVD.

What you need to do is from a new project go into “New”, scroll down to “Ksebara”, load your DVD, “Display Contents” and click OK after selecting what you need to record. Select by clicking the contents and place a check mark against each section, even if it is only one bar.

Obviously this will record the video and audio, so you will now need to use “Sound -. Sample” to strip out the audio.

When you have all the audio split, trimmed, etc, from the audio edit screen, select the audio samples you need to record, by clicking so that there is a tick mark against each.

Then place a blank CD in the tray, and click the “Burn samples” button, which is the bottom right in the lower menu box.

I have OS V8, which looks a little different, but from memory, I think what I have described should do it.

Something is definitely wrong then. I followed the instructions and about 90 minutes later, the progress bar on the DVD import is only about 10% completed. I'll try again and see if my read time is any different, but I'm definitely not reading up to speed.

I am just feeding in a DVD I made some years ago, which is 31 minutes long, using Ksebara and the progress bar is about 25% after 8 minutes, that is about real time.

I know the Kron is not as fast as the Solitaire, but what you are describing does not seem right????.

I have just completed the Ksebara input to a project, the DVD was 31:33 and it took 30:50 to import, very slightly under real time.

I then did a Scene->Sample, which of course was instantaneous, checked that it played OK and went through the record to CD process, up to the point of inserting a disc. It all worked fine.

There is obviously nothing wrong with the process I described, so if your import finally completes then it should be OK.

Just had another thought, if the Ksebara route is going to take forever.

Since it is audio that you require, why not play the DVD on a player and feed the audio it into your Kron, using the RCA sockets. Yes there will be some loss, but I doubt that it will be noticeable.

You can then use the make a CD as described.

Thank you, Ian. The RCA cable route might be my only option. I have about 14 hours of lecture to convert to CD.

I am now importing (via Ksebara) a 45-minute movie. I am now two hours into it and the progress bar is about 50% completed.

I have a brand new Pioneer burner, although it's in the first Kron on the market. I think that was 2000 or 2001.

It is going, though, so I want to be positive and say that it must just be a painfully slow processor speed, and hopefully not a hardware issue.

Would anyone else care to offer insights? Especially those of you who remember whether an old slow Kron is supposed to go THIS slow...

Hi John,

I would think that the best way to get audio in this case would be to follow Ian's suggestion and play the DVD in a separate DVD player and bring the audio in via good quality audio cables. Another advantage of importing the audio only is that you will be using far less hard drive space.

Another way to create this would be to use a program on a pc to rip the audio from a DVD to a .wav file and then convert to MP3, or maybe rip and directly convert to MP3. Does your client know that 14 hours of .wav audio can take 14 CDs? MP3s take up far less space due to compression, allowing you to use fewer CDs.

I just got an email from MS that firmly answers my question. They uploaded a five minute DVD on the oldest machine they had sitting around (something slightly newer than my Kron) and five minutes of DVD took 20 minutes to upload.

That's about right. My Kron ended up taking almost five hours to upload a 45 minute video.

That pretty much closes up the question.

I had a Kron and if I remember right it had a 533MHZ processor and the Kron+ was a 1GIG. You can check to see what you have by clicking on the lower left hand box that says what version OS you have on the System Settings screen.
