MPEG Outputting

Hi Dudes, I was wondering how folks are outputting their commercial work from the S4KP?

I've been delivering my TV show on DVD (believe it or not) and the station then converts it to an MPEG and letterboxes it. My show is shot on HDV and edited in 1080i.

But ideally I'd like to just put my show on dvd in an mpeg-2 file. I've not had much luck doing this with Media Manager except with very short pieces. For example, I cut a golf course commercial that was one minute and Media Manager worked perfectly. But my show is 25 to 27 minutes in length.

I have a client who wants MPEG files on dvd. I'm planning on trying Media Manager again. Anyone had any luck with this?

Oh, and by the way, for my show this week, I'll be cutting an interview with the cast (minus Hal Holbrook) of a wonderful film called "That Evening Sun." Guys, this film is going to factor into the Oscar race later this year with Holbrook looking at Best Actor at 83. You heard it first here!

If you are trying to place MPEG-2 as a DATA DISC in Hi-Def, the "S"4000 does a terrific and FAST job of doing so.


.RENDER your HD project in the FINISH window

.Close out the FINISH window

.Go BACK to your HD project

.Project window>BACKUP STORYBOARD>MODE>HDV

.Place a DVD-R/or a Blu-ray disc in the drive

..Click BACKUP>CHOOSE CD>ADD TITLE>OK

....The DVD-R should last about 20 minutes and a dual about 40. If you have a Blu-ray burner, well, the sky is the limit with a 25 G or 50G disc.

Place your disc in your PC to observe the MPEG 2 files.

NOTE: If you use MTS in lieu of HDV, that file will be a MTS file-commonly known as AVCHD. This will produce a DATA file.

Lastly, when ARABESK 4.3 is released here in the U.S., we SHOULD be able to burn AVCHD DVD's in ARABESK. Do not confuse the above procedure that will produce a DVD as it is a DATA DISC. These instructions are utilizing the PROJECT BACKUP for saving. The DATA DISC can be read on some of the new Blu-ray players such as PS3.....Panasonic 35 series etc.

Interesting, so the HDV option is MPEG-2. I suppose that this makes sense given the fact that the codec is MPEG-2, right? Or am I just a fool or something? You can tell me about that later.

The client wants a dvd or set of dvds with the clips as MPEG files.

I've got 12 clips that are about 3 to 5 minutes each. Will I need to do a separate dvd for each clip? If so, should I save them to a usb or firewire harddrive and then use my MAC to copy the files to a dvd? Seems like I'd be able to rename each file that way efficiently.

I'm going to be trying this out over the weekend. My project deadline will be in a week.

Okay, I used the HDV option and exported it to an SD card. While it created a mpg file, I can do anything with it in my MAC. Quicktime won't play it and I can't bring it into Final Cut.

I'm downloading VLC and will try it.

Very weird, VLC for MAC worked perfectly. The mpeg file looked wonderful.

Looks like the way to go is to export each file as a separate storyboard and then reorder them on my MAC and burn those files to a dvd.

I don't understand how the client is going to use these files though. If I can import them into Final Cut Express, maybe they have a way to import them into a full version of Final Cut.

Getting the whole delivery thing down from our system can be complicated.

Convert the files to a .mov wrapper.
