What would be the maximum size hard drive that would be for suitable use in a classic cassy, I use 46gb at present but would it be OK to use a 200gb?

From memory I think 46 is about a big as Classic can handle, but I would suggest you contact Gary McNally [url]

The last Classic SW (v3.1) will only use (recognize) about 120gb for the video partition. Because we like to always work on the fat part of the drive, our favorite drive is a 180gb SCSI. However, with the CLASSIC software be mindful that the audio partition is a maximum of 4gb no matter how big the hard drive. Whenever any partition become too full all hell can break loose. For audio, if you can work at the mono or hi-fi settings this will give you a max of 67 and 17 hours respectively. If you must work at the CD setting, this only gives you 6.7 hours max. If you have 3 audio tracks of 20 minutes and adjust the levels, each rendering will eat up 1 hour. So be mindful of this and clean-up the audio often. WARNING: a power failure or freeze-up during clean-up may delete your project, so use a UPS.
MacroSystem's recommends a max of 50gb, and to only use SCSI drives. In the past we used to sell IDE to SCSI converters, but they would not work properly in all Classics. They would never work when used in conjunction with the external SCSI back-up drive or SCSI DVD-RAM back-up drive. Because of this we now only carry SCSI drives, and we always have drives 50gb or smaller in stock.
Remember to reload the software whenever you can. Not only does this eliminate possible corrupt software, but also it defrags the hard drive. When drives become fragmented, performance declines and this is not good, particularly in the older machines.
Thanks
Gary McNally
