help- updating

Post by jonisea »

I keep reading these tips but I am still working in the dark ages, I think. I have a Prestige with Arabesk 3 and SE 4. I have no problems with this.
I have been using it for the past 6 years.
I do not work in HD yet so I have been comfortable in this set up.
I have been receiving all the updates ie: SE 5,6,7,8 etc. but have not had time to do anything with them (installing)
Question- Do I need to install ALL or just the SE 8 and Arabesk 4 to make it the most up to date? Any advise is great.
Thanks
Jonisea

First of all you will have to purchase the SE8 and Ar 4. You can download the CD or get it from your dealer. You will have to do a full install from SE4. Remember you will lose all projects on SE4 so back up to a lacie hard drive or to tape. There are a lot of advantages to SE8. Also it is a good idea to join Chets Expert site where you can get a lot of help with his tips.. HTH.

You do not have to install each level sequentially, but I remember there was a point (OS version) that you had to have to upgrade to SE8 without a full, destructive install.

I am not sure, but it was either SE4 or SE5 I believe.
My mom always told me that happiness was the key to life.
At school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I said “happy" and they told me I didn’t understand the question.
I told them they didn’t understand life.

Hello Jonisea,

Yes - going from Smart Edit 3 to SE4 or higher will require a clean install (also called a full or destructive install as it wipes your HDD clean, deleting all video and audio data). So, you would be wise to back-up to DV tape whatever scenes, projects in progress that you wish to bring back. But, you can go right from SE3 to Smart Edit 8 with this full install.

It appears you have already purchased (via Club Casablanca, I assume) the OS upgrades so it only requires the actual installation process. After loading the OS then you will need to re-load all the add-on software you have (including DVD Arabesk). As you may know, these add-on software products are on a separate CD from the Operating System -- you simply install the products you own and the activation code will 'automatically' complete the activation for you.

Hope that helps!

Regard,
Chet

WOW. Thank you all for your quick replys. Yes i have been a member of (the Club) and have the cd's. I just never had the time to install them and since I stopped doing weddings and events a few years ago I haven't had the need. I have been doing video and taking movies since 1957 so my love for the editing is in my heart. I now have a Travel agency and put my travel videos on DVD's. We have been all over the world and the Prestige is great for editing all my photos and videos. it seems i always have a project on it so i never installed the new cd's. I just finished a few movies so I can now install and not care what gets eraced. I will take your advice and back up just in case! You will probably hear more from me now that I know where to get help....and FAST! you are great!
