auto split

Has something changed with the auto split feature in SE 8.1? I firewired my footage into my solitaire and the autosplit won't work. It gives me a 1.02 segment and the rest is simply the remainder of the footage in one great big piece? Any suggestions?

Hello Pauline,

The only variable I can think of is related to HDV footage and the setting that allows the auto-split of it.

Check the following setting:
Go into the System Settings menu
Click on 'Additional Settings'
If you are not using an HD camera and down-converting, make certain the 'Cut recognition' setting is set to 'Startcode'. If it is/was set to 'Time' - you will need to set it back to Startcode and re-import your footage to get the auto-split to function properly (like it has in the past for you).

If your footage is from an HDV camcorder and being down-converted to SD, you need to set this Cut recognition to 'Time' prior to importing/recording footage for auto-split functionality.

Hope that helps!

Regards,
Chet

I am using SD footage only. I checked the additional settings and the cut recognition was set to startcode....I have had all three of my Sony VX2100 cleaned professionally this summer and I am wondering if there is a setting in the cameras that they have changed. Thanks for the suggestion, we appreciate everyone who participates and offers help .

Can someone explain the auto split please? I have never used it and it sounds like I could benefit from it. Thanks in advance...Bob....

Auto split will work in your Renommee and Avio Pro, but I don’t think in your classic.

When you select the “Split” function from the “Editing” window, in the drop down box there are buttons “Split position”, “Auto”, “Use” and “Drop”. Clicking the “Auto” button will automatically split your footage each time the Cam has been stopped and started.

This is a great feature which can save lots of time when editing footage that has lots of short scenes.

Thanks Ian, I will use it when I get the oppurtunity. I can thank of several uses. During most races I start and stop too much to even think about that. I tried to shoot thru 1 night and it was a mess. I got all messed up trying to find my way when I edited. The racing works better using split and insert. My Quadcam works well on my TV shows and my church services. When I shoot a race I dump the whole tape into the computer and use the split option to split the different classes and their races. That works well. Thanks Ian as usual you are a great help. Bob...

Hi Bob

You can still use auto split after you put the footage in you don't have to record any different it just means that when you recorded for a minute and stopped it leaves a scene in your scene bin from that minute-start the camera again and that is your next one in the scene bin.I thought you knew about this because that feature is the biggest time saver in the whole development of the casablanca editor. When I film a wedding I some times come back and one of my tapes with 3 to 400 cuts in one hour of footage. To split that up manually would take me hours but with this auto split function it takes me a minute or so. This will bring your editing time back dramatically and you might be able to take a holiday some time. :D

This function only works when you import it by firewire not analogue. Tip: when you do your car races you might want all your camera operators to use a white board so they can hold it briefly in front of the camera when you have a restart with info on it like Race 3 restart 5 or some thing like that so you can rename them in the editing stage for easy recognition. Hope this makes your editing allot faster.

PS. For this feature you need the Pro pack.

Hi Jeanton, I would like to take a holiday and come see you in Austrailia. I was there in the 60's in the USAF. I loved it then. I will try the auto split next week. I usually input Svideo but I can input firewire. I got in the habit of Svideo when I used my Avio pro and some feature I liked didn't work with firewire. I can't even remember what it was now, getting old!!! The auto split may save me time. I am all for that. I like working smarter rather than harder. LOL!
We got rained out this past week so I may have a free moment this week. I used to think people that were able to work from home were lucky but I have done it the last 10 years and you just work all the time. I am not sleepy so I am working now. Wife already in bed. Thanks for your help. Us old guys need all the help we can get. Bob....

Meanwhile, I still can't figure out why my footage won't auto split. It is set as Chet suggested and the SD footage was firewired into the Solitaire Plus. Hmmm, no solution yet.

After talking with Chet on the phone, we tried to auto split some footage together and it worked! It isn't the same footage I had trouble with last week, but I am going to go back to the original sled and see what is happening by autospliting my original video. No settings were changed, just the sled and I used another video... Hmmm. Let's hope it continues. Thanks Chet and those of you who offered input.
