IMPORTANT DISCOVERY:BOGART HD AUTO-SPLIT USING USB

Post by LouBruno »

I made a VERY VERY important discovery when downloading via USB in AVCHD and other card formats:

PROBLEM: When using AUTO-SPLIT in HD project mode within the scene bin, after about 20 clips, the preceding clip's last frame represents the 1st frame of the adjacent frame. In other words, the preceding clips very last last frame MIGRATES over to the next viewable clip to the right. That right-side clip now has a frame or two of the clip to the left as its first frame.

This results in not viewing the proper frame thus the editor must manually trim each scene until the true represented frame is observed. I used both a CF card containing .M2T files from my SONY pro camera and AVCHD files from my fabulous Canon HF S11.

NOTE:This issue only involves USB downloads from cards, flash drives and hard drives-NOT HDV TAPE.

SOLUTION: I did not auto-split the entire scene upon downloading and viewing the entire HD clip.

PROCEDURE: Import the entire downloaded HD scene in the clipboard. I then deleted the original (can always be undeleted) HD CLIP. One does not have to delete the original. I exported the clip BACK to the scene bin. I then engaged auto-split. All clips were split properly. You also have the option via the clipboard to export to another empty hd project and use the auto-split function in the new project.

. I did several test and EVERY single scene (mine was 238 scenes) was correctly auto-splitted and representative of that clip located to the right of another clip.

Sorry Lou,

can't reproduce that for AVCHD-PAL-Imports via USB.
If I understand you right, in normal autosplit you see at the end of each scene a frame of the next scene?
In PAL there is only 1 frame audio missing at the beginning of each splitted scene, that I'm aware of.

I also do not see a problem here (in PAL).
I imported 5 hours of AVCHD footage from the Sony AVCHD camera (Memory Stick or Hard Drive)in one go. Every single clip was perfectly cut to the frame.
But as Hans says, all the clips are missing audio for one frame at the beginning of each clip. But one would trim all clips anyway, so no big deal for me.

I guess then your audio issue in PAL my be related to our NTSC issue. In both cases a manual trim is necessary.

However, by using the clipboard procedure, all is well in NTSC land.

SO, do me a favor in PAL. Try the clipboard method and see if your audio issue is corrected as is the NTSC video issue.

Nice catch Lou although as I don't use AVCHD it does not affect me.

Neither does the PAL related audio bug affect me, but I would not consider the bug acceptable and I disagree that all auto-cut Scenes need trimming anyways.

Mine don't.
My mom always told me that happiness was the key to life.
At school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I said “happy" and they told me I didn’t understand the question.
I told them they didn’t understand life.

Hi Lou,
clipboarded 35 mins to a new HD project.
Autosplit brought 50 scenes. As in original project.
Still 1 frame Audio is missing in each PAL take.
Sorry

BTW: Missing of 1 frame audio at the beginning of AVCHD footage takes was also reported
from users of PC editing programs.
Thus I believe it is not a Casablanca specific bug.

Since I shoot video using this nice Sony camera that is equipped with a HUGE hard drive, I tend to shoot much longer sequences than I really need. So all scenes require some trimming later :-)

Audio is not out of sync in PAL land. It is "just" one frame that is missing audio somehow.
I had a discussion with AVCHD users the other day. And nobody seems to have noticed this glitch before I mentioned it. So it is not a big deal.

Don't get me wrong but in general it would be more effective to report bugs to MacroSystem instead of posting them here, I guess. I am not sure if MS still reads the messages here. How are they supposed to do - with a team of 4 or 5 guys anyway??!

.

Volker: Sometime what appears to be a "BUG" may not be or it is not fixable. For instance, AVCHD in I-MOVIE on an APPLE is reported to me having the same trim situation. So, I am wondering if it has something to do with file formats? Who knows. :-)

SO...if something is a bug or something is not a bug,it does not really matter as this workaround works wonders, saves time.

I had over two hundred scenes. I no longer have to trim each scene after the 20th clip in the scene bin. Others will not have to sit past two hundred scenes either and adjust one by one.... with my finding.

I am just trying to help the community here which may have different issues in our NTSC format that differs from PAL. Agree?

Anyway you wrote: " I tend to shoot much longer sequences than I really need. So all scenes require some trimming later."

I don't know if you are referring to the auto-split or the fact you wil eventually trim all of your scenes.

Try my method and let us know as you may never again may have to trim clips manually but instead rely on auto-split.

Sure! I do agree!!!
I don't know if you are referring to the auto-split or the fact you wil eventually trim all of your scenes.
After auto-splitting my scenes (which is a very important and time saving feature) I manually trim all (!) of them in a second step.
I will try your method on my next project. But Hans already said that it did not affect the missing audio-frame bug.

Maybe another PAL/NSTC difference...

I love this board. I have learned so much at this place.
And Lou, don't stop posting your discoveries here, even if the PAL community thinks "It works fine here in PAL land" :-)))
