Hello everyone. My name is Tiago and I'm from Portugal where there is the best food in the world:) but what brings me here will not reveal the traditional food of Portugal, may one day put a new topic to talk about that:) the problem is:

I have a solitaire (year 2003) that is making me lose patience.

The problem is that suddenly switches off.

This has happened some time back, I will test the RAM but it was fine.

Whenever I am working for a few hours at solitaire turns off being always to restart several times in a row until it stops doing it.
I've done several tests, made the total installation of SmartEdit 6.2c.
I use a 300gb HDD and a 160GB, 7200rpm ide and have 1024 Ram memory
Already happened to someone? What can I do to not take up a hammer and break it? (joking)

seriously, my patience runs out because I have many work's to edit and not have the idea what can be ... the motherboard can be tired? Thank you all.

First thing to do is sell the hammer.

Overheating is probably the most common problem.

This can come from something as basic as dust blocking the ventilation openings in the unit to a power supply or fan dying.

Or even a loose wire lightly snagging in the fan path slowing it down or stopping it (I have seen all of these), causing the unit to overheat.

I would check for the clogged ventilation first and then make sure it is not right up against a wall, corner or have things (especially heat producing) directly against or within an inch of it's sides and back or if you have anything on top of it.

Try running the unit with the sled you are not using removed and/or with a small fan blowing on the unit while you are editing.

If it stops shutting down you know for sure it is heat related and you can start sleuthing further to find out why.

You mentioned that your unit keeps shutting off. Does it shut off as though you shut it off normally, or do you get the prompt that an unrecoverable problem occured and scolds you for shutting it down improperly? If once you try to cool your unit down to check for an overheating problem as Tim has suggested and it does not stop your problem. You may have a corrrupted OS.

If you have had your unit since 2003 and have not done a full destructive install on it, you should start to think about doing so. You said you had tried installing OS6.2, but didn't say whether you installed it using the full destructive method where it fully cleans out your hard drive and everything on it, or the non destructive method where it saves your projects but doesn't really fully clean the hard drive.

I had a similar problem when I upgraded to OS-5 from OS-4. It kept shutting off constantly. I later found out that it was only when I was using a 2 monitor system. If I switched to just the video monitor it would work Ok. When I switched to OS-6 I could use both monitors again. I found OS6 to be very stable, but you also might want to try using an older version OS to see if it has anything to do with your problem. Or use just one monitor instead of the vga and video monitor if you are using a dual monitor setup.
