DV Input Firewire won't work anymore -- Help!

Post by Hodag71 »

Hi,

I am a new user who came here to see if someone can help me with a brand new problem. I've been using Casablanca editing for over 10 years. Really simple workflow. Never had any big problems until yesterday.

I have a Prestige. Yesterday when I tried to add some new video from my camera, I couldn't get it to recognize the camera. I've tried rebooting, unplugging, re-plugging, reconnecting... nothing seems to get the Prestige to recognize the camera. I switched cameras and tried a differnet camera. No Luck. I tested the firewire and it works just fine between other devices. Just for the heck of it, I tried going the other way and sending finished video from the Prestige to the camera, and that doesn't work either.

Help. Anyone have any ideas that might solve my problem?

Thanks.

When a colleague has these same symptoms I recommend the following:
1. Test the connection between devices (camcorder/deck and Casablanca editor) with a different DV cable... but make certain not to 'hot-swap'. Turn off power on the camera/deck prior to connecting

2. Try the connection with a different DV source (if you have one), like a different camera or deck.
These two 'tests' narrow down the likely issue - since you have apparently done these two steps, it sounds to me like your video-board has been damaged. And it is usually (though not always) a hot-swap that is the culprit. But this is a 'diagnosis-guess' from a distance. A qualified technician would be the one to give the final diagnosis for you. Best guess is to contact MSUS Tech Support (or the appropriate support team if you're outside of North America) for further diagnosis and possible replacement of the video board.

Looks like either the Firewire interface of the Prestige system or of the camera is defective.

Can you transfer via Firewire from that camera to a different DV device?
Can you transfer via Firewire from the Prestige to a different DV device?

Did you try both Firewire inputs of your Prestige?

Any settings in the camera that could have been messed up?

Thanks Chet & Volker,

I've been able to isolate the problem to the Casablanca as the my cameras interface with other devices just fine.

Question? Do you know if a bad video board would have any effect on the other inputs / outputs?

My analog inputs/outputs still work fine and I have no problems buring DVD.

Volker. You are a lifesaver. I forgot about the rear input. I switched the cable to the back and it works! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!!!
