Just lost all my Bogart projects.Backup can not be restored!

Now it happend to me.
The WORST CASE:
I imported some photos with Photo-Transfer.
Bogart did not like one of the photos and crashed.
It came back with the message that it recovered an older backup copy of the projects.
Most of the clips and storyboards were still there.
I decided to restore a backup from my external HD with HD-Backup Bogart.
Restore did not work. Stopps after a few minutes.
All projects are empty now.
I just lost work from weeks - if not months.
Does anyone have an idea how to "repair" a harddrive (the Backup drive) ???
I am going to have a drink now, maybe two
((((

That sucks Volker.
The only thing I can think of is to try to reinstall a Bogart version like 2.4 that is more stable if you were on 3.1 and try to restore it from there.
I am now again back on 3.1 after talking to MS Support and they told me to try an update from 2.4 to 3.1 as I was not happy with
my twister not working and some other things in 3.1 after a full install.
They never put in the driver for the twister in 3.1 so thats why it wasn't working and now it is working again.
If your HD is stuffed i can't help you, I don't have not enough knowledge to fix that but try the first suggestion and let us know how you went.

Volker - I too am sorry to hear about the situation you are facing. Were you, by change editing a project on an external HDD using 'Store and Share'? I have heard of another situation where an attempted restore from HD Back-up while using Store N Share resulted in a loss of all data.

Hi Volker,
very sorry about your mishaps.
I never had any trouble restoring using HD-Backup.
Even Backups done in Bogart 2 were successfully done
in Bogart 3.1.
As Jeanton I would recommend doing a complete
new installation of 3.1 and try once more.
Hi Jeanton,
did you have your replies after using the MS-Address
I sent to you recently?
If the trouble with Twister has been fixed occuring with 3.1 release
I wonder how it can be fixed since we had no update for 3.1 PAL.
Has MS sent a special update to you?
I had sent some bug description in Arabesk 4.9 to same address
but there was no reaction yet.
Maybe Chet could offer a successful functional target address for
reports to MSDE?

No Store-and-share has been used.
I tried to restore the backup files on a different (newly installed) Bogart system. Same problem.
I could restore other projects from that backup drive. So "only" some sectors on the drive seem to be defective.
Tomorrow we are going to try to repair the drive with a Linux expert. Wish me luck.

Hi Volker,
I wish good luck for recovering your data.
So your's is a Linux formatted harddrive.
Was it a brand new one before you used it for HD-Backup?
Seems the formatting process for Linux wasn't successful
or the hd had an initial fault.
My HD-Backups are strictly on FAT32 formatted hds.
I think this is more versatile since those are instantly
recognized on PC and I even may copy data.
I know there are workarounds using Linux drivers
but to complicated.

Hi,
I also had to face that kind of problems with the backup function, but mainly with Smart Edit...It seems that with bogart it is a little more stable...If you want to recover your data, just plug your HDD through USB to a PC (if formatted in FAT, then no problem with MS Windows) if not use Linux, enter the HDD and here they are...all your videos (.dv for SD or .m2ts for HD). Then you can save them on your computer or another external HDD...but unfortunately, without the effects...
If you're not a linux user...just download a linux live cd like the Ubuntu one:
http://www.ubuntu.com and burn the iso on a cd.
Then restart your pc and make it boot through the cd/dvd drive and here you are....a fully functionnal linux distro...
Hope this will help...
Cheers.

Hi Hans
There has been No update since 3.1 but the Tech support guy told me to try an update from 2.4 to 3.1 rather then a full install and that fixed the twister problem.
And yes there have been several replies from the Email adress you gave me I will send you my correspondense with them in a private Email to you.

Repairing the drive with chkdsk was no success at all. It scanned and "repaired" the drive all day but then HD-Backup could not restore the latest projects.
I could see and read the drive with my Windows PC (the drive was not Linux formatted like I thought). I had access to all the older projects but the latest projects showed CRC checksum errors which obviously could not be repaired anymore.
Bad luck. I will cry a bit now and tomorrow I will start all over again. What a wonderful world. Not.
Cheers,
Volker
@swisscasauser: I am not talking about exported clips and storyboards here. The finished videos are stored on many different systems. But the actual projects I was working on were saved only on this HD-Backup Drive. And that system works with its special file management system whatever. No AVIs or MTS files here. Just plain data that only Bogart understands.
Maybe I should buy a Mac for video editing!? But I hate learning new things

Volker, I feel bad for you. I think this is the price we will all have to pay in the future no matter which editing system a videographer owns. The bottom line is that as long as we are saving to hard drives and solid state media ALL of us will some day lose data in some form; either by corrupted files or a non-functioning HD.
We are all being hammered by the industry that TAPE is dead and no longer a viable media to capture video. This is a sad state. I am of the opinion that tape is STILL the best way to ARCHIVE projects. I just upgraded my camera. I had to make a painful decision what format is BEST for me. I already own an AVCHD camera but also decided to purchase the SONY HVR-270. I decided to purchase this camera because it is a HYBRID.
Simply stated, I have the capacity to not only RECORD to a solid state card but also RECORD to TAPE simultaneously. For me this was a solution to the reasearch I have done as of late. I know of an individual who lost an entire "once in a lifetime" vacation due to a corrupted card. I also know of a person who did a PRO shoot "in the wild" and LOST everything on a card. One of the newer cameras that use NXCAM are exhibiting "buffer-overflow" card problems. Imagine, a family or clients wedding day totally wiped-out!!
Saving to a HD for long time archival is dangerous. HD's have moveable parts. Saving to cards, though the current format, can also be a problem due to static electricity and failure to allow the buffer to fully download to the card when losing battery power or powering-down abruptly.
I guess what I am stating is that though HD's and cards can store archival media, TAPE is also a good archival method to use in tandem with the aformentioned.
