The HD Backup versions are OS version specific in many cases so you might be using the wrong HD Backup version for your OS version.

Perhaps Chet or someone else has kept track of what version goes with what version.

Someone else was having that problem and I swear the cure for them was going to a different HD Backup version.

Could be wrong, but if that isn't it then it's likely a glitch in your OS and that would require a full, destructive install to fix which I know you don't want to hear. :P

The HD drive is formatted in NTFS format. Bogart does not support NTFS drives.
You have to format the drive in FAT32 or EXT.2/3 which is not easy.

I think Chet has a step by step tutorial !?

Hi Franklin,

I do my HD-Backups on 1TB hardrives FAT32 formatted successful.
I have formatted different 1TB drives to FAT32.
Have a look at the link and printout for information.

http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.UK/index. ... format.htm

Download the small FAT32 exe file and follow the directions.
Just make sure you are formatting the USB new drive and not your operating
system C drive.

When using Bogart HD Back-up and you attach a drive that the System doesn't like it asks if you'd like it formatted.

I just formatted a drive to FAT32, plugged it into the S4000 and launched the back-up software.

It then offered to format it for me (which took about 25 seconds) and then was ready for use . . .

Downside (for me) is that when I then try and plug it back into the Mac it also asks if I'd like to format it as it's in an unrecognisable format

I believe that the WD external drive has 'some' automatic software on it to help people back-up their PC's.
If you plug that drive into a PC does something happen (a program launch or some message) ?
If so then the same is happening with your Bogart (Linux) machine.

To get rid of this isn't always as simple as just doing a format

I used a free program called Swiss Knife from CompuApps to format my 500 GB LaCie drive. http://www.compuapps.com/index.php?opti ... Itemid=193 There is another version for about $10 that formats larger hard drives.

This automatic software is called 'Virtual CD'. If the icon for the 'Virtual CD' appears on your desktop when you plug this USB drive into your PC then that is what's crashing your Bogart machine as it tries to launch this program - and fails.

WD say;
"If you don't wish to run WD SmartWare or use the security features, you can disable the VCD following the steps below. The VCD can be re-enabled by running the VCD Manager"
