hd on the rene+

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference worth seeing on a standard dvd, if I down convert my hd footage directly into the rene+ vs trying to work with hd footage in the rene+?

There was an issue with internal HD to SD downconvert that was causing really ugly edge artifacts on the SD DVD with the gen3 machines at least, not sure if it was affecting the gen2 machines as HD editing on the gen2 machines was too painfully slow for me.

Even without that I doubt if you would be able to detect the difference if your end delivery was SD.

However, there is nothing like first hand knowledge and judgement on this.

If I were you I would select a minute of the type of footage you normally shoot/edit/deliver and input it both ways, edit it both ways, create an SD DVD both ways and compare the result.

A minute project is plenty long enough to do a compare/judgement on this and plenty short enough to not take you much significant time to try and then you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt.

What I am sure of is the huuuuuuuuuuuge time savings at every step downconverting in cam represents.

First, the real time downconvert versus the longer HD input finalizing (if it doesn't just crash at some point and make you do it again), second in the actual editing time and third in the Add Film (internal downconvert) at the Arabesk end.

I will take your word. That being said, is there really a difference on the bogart systems editing in HD then making a sd dvd versus down converting hd straight into the bogart systems? I ask because I am not burning to bluray and is it worth the new system if I am not burning BR and can down convert straight into the machine.

Jeff,

Most of the new cams offer strictly USB for digital input now which you cannot use with the gen2 editors.

Outside of that, as long as you are shooting strictly for an SD end product and you have cams that allow you to digitally downconvert (firewire) into your Ren I would not spend money on gen3 machines.

The Ren is plenty powerful enough for SD editing.

That makes sense. I have to ask, is anyone delivering everything on BR? I have had one client since BR came out that has actually asked for it. Doesn't seem to be a big demand for it. If I am not mistaken, the only way to deliver a dvd is either BR or SD. Is this true?

WHERE IS THE MENU ? oppsssss, I just say coming soon !!!,no menu but chapters every 5 Mn !

Not sure what you are asking for sure, Jeff.

With the gen3 machines you can create a SD DVD or HD on a DVD (very limited capacity) or a Blu-ray Disk.

Viable alternative HD end product options are HDV tape or HD files to memory card, flash drive or hard drive.

HDV tape is a market dying fast before it really ever got established and I think Blu-ray is going to die out rather quickly as well.

Flash storage is becoming more common between people purchasing the non-tape HD cams that can be used to playback memory cards and flash drives and hard drives that keep getting cheaper with higher capacities.

That along with HD capable, larger monitors becoming more mainstream is increasing the customer base for flash storage playback, but not a big draw yet except for the high end customer area.

Not a ton of mid-level customers willing to pay significantly extra for HD end product in the midwest in my experience.

I was under the impression that you either could only burn a sd dvd that was down converted or to get hd quality, you had to use BR. you are saying that I can watch an HD dvd on my dvd standard player? If so, is this only accomplished with the new bogarts systems?

I am not sure, but I believe both systems can burn AVCHD to DVD.

Chet would know for sure.

The capacity on a DVD is of course quite limited for an AVCHD burn.

It is my understanding that the capacity to burn a High-Def video file as an AVCHD file to DVD is only possible with the Bogart series of editors.

As Tim pointed out, you can edit HD with your Renommee Plus but the work-flow is such that it is a laborious task. Certainly feasible with shorter videos but rather inefficient with longer videos. And the export options on the Renommee Plus with HD is to export the edited HD file back out via DV to your HDV camcorder/deck. You could then use a computer based DVD application to create the high-def DVD.

As was also mentioned (or as you asked Jeff) you could also shoot in HD, down-convert from the camera into an SD project on your Renommee Plus and then deliver an SD DVD. I have noticed and others have commented that this process yields a quality higher than straight SD acquisition.
