If you are meaning, self installed, don't think I'd recommend trying it.
If you mean as a manufacturer or third party install, don't hold your breath.
On the other hand, you can use USB extension or hubs with these machines and I would suggest just buying an extension or a hub if you want more than one jack and placing the hub where you want the access.
Extensions such as:

Hubs such as:

I have the S-4100 it it DOES have a front USB port located on the far front left side of the unit. It does require the special key that came with your S-4100 to open a litle cover. It is "sunk" in very deep. I use 4 inch extensions all the time.

Actually, now that you mention it, the S4000 did as well, I just preferred to use a hub.
If you have lost the key any thin, shard tool can pop that cover if I remember correctly.

I have found that some external hard drives are not recognized in the front USB socket of my S4000pro. I understand it has other uses in the machines when they are used in the other models made by MS.
My set up is this
Short extension lead from a back USB socket to front for connection to friends drive for transfer of files.
The front USB has a standard mouse plugged in. This is always recognized.
One of the back ones has a cordless tracker ball in it, which sometimes is not recognized on switch on.
In another back one is connected a hub with 4 drives connected. One is for the whole system back up, another is for additional projects, the remaining two are for story board backup.
Hope this helps.

I have been so far out of touch with all the updates, so here is my question...I have a Prestige with V 6.1d and wanting to know my options about using an external USB HDD, can they be used in this version or this platform? 2nd question is...is there a 256mb limit on the memory that can be installed in this platform?
3rd question...I have been looking at the For Sale forum from time to time, I am looking for HDD Sleds for the Prestige, any suggestions?
Thanks Doug B.

External USB HD is not compatible with Prestige or any Series II Casablanca. You can use an external Firewire drive. There is no advantge in increasing the RAM beyond 256mb.
