I may have to change the hard drive and just wanted to know how the 4000 is opened.

I have the schematic. Send me an e-mail to Gocycle@optonline.net The screws are circled as well that have to be removed.

Opened up the unit, checked the connections, powered on hitting the esc key to try to open the dvd door. ( in case there was a dvd in the unit.) bar goes all the way across and comes up with MacroSystems. Still no monitor and no dvd door open. Unplugged the hard drive power turned on and bar goes across and MacroSystem comes up without the hard drive plugged in. I will have to work on it tonight after my regular job.

Some early 4000''s were fitted with IDE (PATA) drives, then they moved onto SATA. The one you describe should be fine if you have the SATA cables.

BTW - If you have the lid off can you not just lift the burner up (it's not screwed in) and press the open close button on that, just to make sure there's no disc inside :?:
