Prestige and VGA

Hi All,
I recently hooked up a vga monitor to my set up. Here is my problem: When I'm using just my video monitor, with my settings at video in set up, both my prestige and kron are able to import video via auto/manual switching from 3 different sources into the storyboard for editing, and can be viewed on the video monitor. When I switch to vga, and put my settings on vga single or vga dual, I get the casablanca software and storyboard, but cannot longer import video. I can edit the video already on the storyboard, but I get "no video signal" when I attempt to import video. As I said, when hooked up to just the video monitor, no problem, all imports work properly. Switch to vga, no video import. Help!
Thanks,
Garry

Hi Garry,
please tell us your SmartEdit version you are working with.
Also would be fine if you would add in your profile SmartEdit versions to your different
units and your location.
I don't have a Presige unit, but just a thought: Did you really select in
Settings---> Video---> Video Settings--->Input your actual input source?
Maybe this has to be set newly after changing the monitor modes?

Garry,
in one-monitor VGA mode, you won't see video when you load in the fooatge though you actually can hit the record button and record "blindly".
This won't happen in the two-monitor mode and in the Video mode.

Thank you very much Hans-Joachim, and Volker. I am running Smart Edit 7. Hans-Joachim, the settings are correct. What I didn't realize is that I was in fact "recording "blindly" as Volker advised. So I am up and running. One more question please. If I decide to work with 2 VGA monitors, I know I set the Kron and Prestge for dual monitor in settings. Do I need a "Y" type VGA cable for hookup. One end out from the Prestige, and two into the monitors? How would I do both the Kron and Prestige hookup for dual monitors.
Thanks again to you both, for your help.

Garry,
don't know about the output terminals of Kron/Prestige, but I'm sure Volker has the answer?

If you want to work with 2 monitors, you only can use a VGA monitor in combination with a video monitor (or TV set).
The VGA monitor will display the menus and buttons while the video monitor will display the video images (playback, trim, split, ...).
Maybe you can use a Y-cable to use 2 VGA monitors but this would mean that they both display the same content.
I am not aware of such cables by the way. I guess you have to use a kind of a "splitter" or some black box with electronics inside for this purpose. But again, those monitors would display the same images then.

seems kind of senseless to have a vga port on the editor and only be able to display the menu and not the actual video. I'm not sure what the advantage is in that. What was Macrosystem thinking? Anyway, thanks again to you both for your help. I appreciate it.

Garry,
The two monitor mode sends pure video to the Video monitor and the GUI (all on screen controls and information) to the VGA monitor.
This is the normal editing format for most professional set ups and was probably what
MS was thinking of when they added that feature.
I assume you are using a Video monitor with multiple inputs to share the Video monitor with your Kron and Prestige.
I do not know of any VGA monitors that come with two VGA inputs so you would need to add a KVM switcher to share a VGA monitor.
Most KVM switchers use keyboard commands to switch and I would stay away from those types as I doubt their compatibility with our systems.
Here:
http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/Sear ... ductID=180 i\s one with a rotary dial unit to physically switch between VGA inputs that I
think would work for you.
