The Infamous Red Box of Death

I have always had this on the odd occasion on all my drives ( I have a DV Avio with swappable drives)
But on a 320gb drive that is only about 4 months old I seem to be getting it as soon as I move the track ball.
I am trying to coax it so as to down load the video I currently have on the drive but has anyone else had it this bad or is it likely the drive is dying already.
Thanks

Hello Martin,
It sounds like drive trouble but as long as you have a swappable hard drive set up on your AVIO why not slip in another drive and see if it acts that way as well or if it works OK. That should be a quick way to find out if your first drive is going bad or not.
Next, I would plug in a mouse from your computer to replace your track ball as you mention that the RBD happens when you touch the track ball.
The Gremlins could be hiding in it or the Hard Drive.
Let us all know what you find out.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for that, I have tried another drive and that seems to be working OK
, in fact I am downloading the stuff off that one so that I can try and firewire the very important footage off the dodgy drive onto that one in another Avio DV with swappable drives, once I have cleared it.
Once I have downloaded the whole of the projects off the dodgy one which will take a few days, I will do an install and wipe it clean and see if that sorts the problem out.
I will let you know.

Martin, just happened to notice this older post of yours, where you are getting the red box of death when you move the trackball. I am also experiencing that problem, however it is happening on both of the hard drives I have. I believe my problems began with installing smart edit 7 on the drives. I have a Prestige which seems to act quircky to different Operating systems. Had no problems with OS4. It wouldn"t work at all with OS 5 (when I was using two monitors) until OS5.1d came out. That fixed the problem, but by that time I had switched to OS6. That OS6 worked very well. No problems to speak of. Once I downloaded OS7 (Whether I am using two monitors or not) My unit shuts down rather often usually in the Title prrogram for some reason. All I have to do is just begin to move the trackball to select OK or whatever, and it powers off.
The only shining light with this, is that it has forced me into using Powerkey more often to get around the problem. You can do things with powerkey much faster once you get to remember what all the buttons do.
It doesn't do it everytime, but often enough to be annoying. I attempted go go back to OS6 to see if the problem cleared up, but It wouldnt let me just go back to 6 without deleting all my projects. I was able to go from OS6 to 7, but I guess you cant go backwards for some reason. I haven't attempted to use another trackball or mouse from my computer
Do you happen to be running OS7?

Bob,
Sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing with your unit. I wanted to chime in and share that many customers have had nothing but the most solid performance on Smart Edit 7 -- but one in particular was having difficulty until she performed a clean install of Smart Edit 7. You _ca_ do an update from Smart Edit 5 or 6 up to Smart Edit 7 but we do highly recommend a clean/full install as soon as possible. The folks that have done this are enjoying all the new benefits that come with Smart Edit 7 without any of the performance/stability issues.
Regards,
Chet

Hi Bob,
No I'm still on 4.10. Currently I am trying to complete the project that I managed to transfer over to another drive, so am reluctant to even try the dodgy drive as there is still a project on there that I want to save.
Once the current project is completed I will try to download all the stuff left on the dodgy drive then do a complete re-install to see if that solves the problem.
Best regards,
