I know the standard video format for DVD is mpeg2, but what about saving the video in a format that can be posted on Youtube, the video posting site? How's that done?

This can currently be done in the "S" model if it is HDV. The project can be saved as an MTS file. Future upgrades to the "S" model should have the EXACT compression for YOU TUBE when exporting a project.

However, in your case, there is software available that converts MPEG2 to MPEG4. AVI to MPEG4.


I did a Google search last month and came up with some softwares. What you would do is simply EXPORT via DISC TRANSFER your AVI files and import same via your PC to the program.

Here is another option: Take your AVI file and use WINDOWS MEDIA. Simply use the dropdown window to compress to the web. I did this with the Moline Video a few years back and placed it on Google Video.

I use two programs in Mac: (1) Roxio Crunch; and (2) Vishub.

Truthfully, for long projects, the best way I've discovered is to firewire it over to my Mac into Final Cut or Imovie HD (the older vesion, new Imovie is awful). The conversion process by ripping it from dvd is very slow (more than real time), so, I've just used firewire from my AVIO.

Now, I can't wait for my S4000 Pro for other options.

I've found that VisHub is fantastic for conversion to Flash, which I've found to be the very best for Internet. My work is all over the web and this is process I've used for two years.

Worked flawlessly and gives you many options to various formats outputs on the web or whatever. I downloaded the free trial that works. Get the 30 day trial. Hope this helps. ( new iMovie is just plain terrible)

Hi Jim

I have used Windows Movie Maker (free on XP) and recorded it out of my casablanca by firewire back to my camera, connected the camera to my PC by firewire and recorded it in to Movie Maker. Drop the whole scene in the timeline and a lot of options will open up eg. save on your computer, send to web, send in email. Just try a few options and see the file size and you should be able to post a video on youtube.

About two yeas ago, I use the firewire to tape and then into the PC. It was way too time consuming. For smaller projects, I started using Roxio Crunch which converted to Quicktime and then when I uploaded to Blip.tv, they converted to Flash.

Then I bought Vishub and it converted to Flash for me. It worked great!

Based on the Youtube Macrosystem site, there appears to be a way to convert to Flash coming in Bogart. This will help all of us.

Note that for long projects, I firewire to Final Cut or Imovie HD like I mentioned above. This was suggested by Chet some months ago.

Didn't know you could do that might have tryed it some time ago but think the old Avio did't want to do it so I stuck to do it this way. I don't load footage it to often into my PC and when I do it the projects are no longer than 5 min anyway. Don't mind if it is time consuming sometimes gives me a break from editing and time to get out of the office for a coffee or something else. Thanks for everyone who uses this forum for the great tips and information, keep it up.
