I was putting in a new hard drvie and noticed a small round battery in the s4000. Does anyone know why there is a battery in the unit?

Powers the relays. As it depletes, the unit will power up on its own to recharge

Hi Lou,
I think Johno is refering to the round memory cell saving the BIOS inputs.
This cell will hold the BIOS memory up to about 5 years.
Don't replace this cell without special precautions otherwise the BIOS has to be set newly.
Maybe Chet can jump in for some words about it

There are two batteries in the S4000.
The little silver cell is for the bios and if changed with the machine on shouldn't affect any of the settings - shouldn't being the operative word
WARNING - there are live mains voltage in that area of the machine so I
don't recommend you do it yourself
On a German forum Michael Huebmer posted this - no idea if it works;
The S-4000Pro has an accumulator built in. If the voltage drops too far, the system will power on to charge. The normal power off time is 30 minutes, if the timer settings were not changed.
You can disable the accumulator if you go to the MediaManager settings / device and switch ON the watch display in standby mode. Then the system will not disconect the power supply and the accumulator will not go empty. This should cancel the 'auto power on' procedure. :thumbup:
