Further to a question you kindly answered in June re (a) availability of unit in the UK and (b) 'had the bugs been eliminated';

I have been advised that plans to move on to version 2 have been shelved and that V1 is being issued although it is not fully up to speed yet. Can you advise problems that are still inherent in this version, particularly if these include compatibility problems with Canon XHA1.

Being the owner of a new XHA1 it would obviously be pointless purchasing 4000pro if there is even the slightest risk of a compatibility problem!

Bogart 2 has not been "shelved", however, we are advised that an interim V1.3 will be released shortly that includes media manager and improved camcorder compatibilty.

The XHA-1 works perfectly as does my HV-10, my HV-20 and my HV-30. Use it all the time w/o a problem.

My S4000 Pro is supposed to be on my doorstep today.

I'm assuming that it was shipped with Bogart version 1 or whatever is currently out.

I'm planning on using it with my two Sony HDV cameras (1000U, which is really an HC7 in a bigger box, and an HC9, which I've found to be a wonderful camera especially when connected to my Letus).

My understanding is so long as you shoot in 1080i, there are no compatibility problems. I've committed to interlaced for my latest documentary feature. But the problems I've heard about the Canon is with 24f only. Frankly, 24f has given most NLE's trouble from what I've read. This is probably why those cameras are so much cheaper than their progressive counterparts (like the wonderful HVX).

My S4000pro (PAL) works in conjunction with my Canon XHA1. There are irritating problems though. Often the editor will not record from the camera even though the editor will start and stop the camera playing, this occurs with both HD and SD. Switching the camera and sometimes the machine off and on sorts it out. The other problem is that when recording in HD it stops if there is a tape drop out which means you have to watch it all the way through. I'm a bit puzzled, as sometimes if I rewind back before the apparent drop out and start again it records OK. HD recorded to a normal DVD and played in my PS3 is stunning.

The Bogart software on the S4KPro has a maximum of only 2G per written file. If you have a longer program, it will stop at that junction and brings you back to the menu (on a PS3) and will have to click the succeeding icon again to start the next 11 minutes. Apparently, they demonstrated a process in Germany where it will play your files all the way through without interruption, but that's still in the works.

You don't have to wait to buy a Blu-ray disc if your program is only about 20 minutes or less to test it. A regular DVD will work with that time content limitation. (Verbatims are supposed to be good. I ordered a box from Tape Resources for about $9 each. B&H also sells them with comparative pricing).

HD is here for the S4K, and it works beautifully....marketing it is another story. An 11 minute highlight, clients with PS3s or WM on the comp are the only select group you can sell it to...with a detailed pre-discussion on the end product.

I transferred an hour and fifteen HD program back on a DVCam tape (DSR25u), and it seems to have copied it in its entirety. I haven't checked if there were any segmented glitches yet. I also bought a Lacie external Blu-ray burner. I had to dish out the extra expense since I have a nagging client wanting her HD Blu-ray wedding. The next step is to dump the tape footage to the Mac on Imovie or FCP as a single file and sending it out to the burner via the Titanium Toast 9 program. Keeping fingers crossed.

Can't wait till "Humphrey" can finally kiss "Ingrid" with no interruptions.....

I have found just using the onscreen transport controls to stop the tape, rewind and Play again normally "kicks in" the connection rather than having to turn the cam off and back on.

Tims comment about turning the tape transport on and off is interesting as this does not seem to always work for me. I have just started to play the tape from the camera first before going to the record screen, it seems to work every time so far in SD, I've not tried this in HD. What I have noticed in HD is that if I record in pause it will not continue to record after pressing play, it says no video signal, when there obviously is. I think this is related to the problem of not recording through drop-outs.
