How to do this most basic of effects?

I'm ashamed to admit I've never solved this dilemma, owning 4 Macrosystem editing machines, and using Casablanca for the last 8+ years. Please help if you can.

Let's say I'm shooting a head-on shot of a solo singer at a wedding so you can see if the lip movements match the sound.

For some reason, say I accidentally jiggle the camcorder or lose focus for a second, I may want to cover this in editing later
with a montage of previously shot scenes (flower arrangements or other cutaways dissolved artistically). Now I know I can
make a dissolving montage of scenes, then make a new scene (incorporating the dissolves). Let's say this new scene lasts
10 seconds. I can make a sound sample of the singer for the 10 seconds of bad footage I want to cover and lay this under
the montage, but on either end of this sequence is a "straight" cut...no dissolve. How do I dissolve both "in" and "out"
without throwing the timing completely off?

If I dissolve, the timing on the singing is thrown off (a one-second dissolve on the front and back will amount to 2 X 15
frames off-sync when we return to the picture of the singer after the montage).

I've played around for years trying to solve this dissolving/syncing problem and have never solved this most basic of effects.

I feel so stupid. You see this effect perfectly accomplished constantly on broadcast television but how do you do on a Cassie?

Many thanks to any and all who have the answer. :?:

Use an "Insert". This leaves the audio of the base scene intact and just drops your insert video clip (from the scene bin) over the original video. Use the Range control to either trim or position the insert. You can use transitions at either end of the Insert and it will not affect the audio of the base clip.

For INSERTS as Craig mentioned, you can always do a B-Roll later during the reception of guests sitting in their chairs facing the same direction as the prior shot of the singer.

You can also use a slo-mo (TWIXTOR) for the 10 seconds needed of as you say a montage. This montage could consist of a short scene of the couple exchanging vows, kissing at the alter-a flashback.

Everyone has a different style and this was just my 2 cents.

Also, it's possible to butt 2 inserts together and apply transition effects (i.e., dissolve) at the beginning, middle and end of inserts, if the one long scene is too redundant looking.
