Can s4000 edit Panasonic's MXF format?

We have a client who wants us to edit a project shot on a Panasonic HVX200 (he thinks). He has the MXF files on a hard drive but no access to the camera. Can we input these files into the S4000 or any Macrosystems machine?

If we are taliking about Material Exchange Format files, the answer is NO. This extention is a wrapper only. You will need a XF converter vehicle to exchange wrapper information and then test same via Media Manager.

I've got a different answer...I made some test yesterday with different .mxf files (XDCaM sd at 25 MB/s, IMX at 50 MB/s, XDCAM hd at 35 MB/s) all files with .mxf extension have been imported successfully via Media Manager...but...unfortunately, this bloody MM only imports HD video at about 3-7 MB/s, so that makes those files impossible to work correctly with because of the degradation !
It's really a shame, I must say that I use MM a lot to export because it now works ok (for HD videos especially), but the import fonction is still not intersting to use because of the degradation of the images.
The positive thing is that MM accepts a lot of different formats (including QuickTime, Divx, Xvid, WMV, and....MXF...). But MS really has to improve rapidely the quality of the import... and to fix this incredible loss of bitrate...

Remember .MXF files are ony wrappers. That wrapper must contain information within. That is why it has to be tested in MM for the different codecs. The .MXF file itself does not import unless in tandem with a compatable codec.. The degradation is a reported issue so it is not useable for certain codecs in regards to a finished problem.


I am interested in knowing all about your audio synch. with the various files. Some quicktime files (.MOV) files work while others are out of audio synch. NTSC vs. PAL? Curious.

You're right Lou, MXF is just a container or a wrapper as you've mentionned.
I know that, and the wrapper obviously has to be filled with something (compatible video streams for ex.).
As I've said before, I've successfully imported such files, mainly with Sony formats (the entire XDCAM family (mpeg 2/4), IMX (mpeg 2), DVCAM, but also a Panasonic one with DVCPro 25/50). So the good news is that it seems that the most common files used these days wrapped in .MXF are compatible with MM.
