16:9 help

Post by DrDray »

I shot a project on my Sony PD170 in it's SD 16:9 wide mode. I now want to dump the footage into my solitaire but I still have a 4:3 monitor. What settings should I be setting? In project settings I have Image set to normal and format to 16:9 Anamorphic. I played some recored footage back on the solitaire and noticed I do not see the Cinema scope type borders on the top and bottom like I see in the camera LCD screen. When I trim scenes I can see dark blue borders but the bottom border has a distoted thin line on top of it. I also noticed my system reboots and will always revert back to 4:3 mode in "screen" options under sys. settings when I try to change that to 16:9.

16:9 Ananmorphic

NORMAL and CORRECT.....the PD 170 letterboxed the display

When I trim scenes I can see dark blue borders but the bottom border has a distoted thin line on top of it.

UNDERSCANNED

When you originally set to 16:9, it will default to the same prior setting. Are you saying that there is an auto-power-down?

Lastly, the widescreen results will be poor in quality on a LARGE screen using a 4:3 chip camera as the resolution useage is less than the pixels on the chips.

I still have a few questions here....Since I shot my project in 16:9 widescreen mode on my sony pd170, does this mean that when I create a DVD and play it, is it true that it can only be viewed properly on a 16:9 wide screen TV/monitor? Anotherwords if played on a 4:3TV the images will look squeezed? I was expecting to see the letter boxing border on a 4:3 monitor just like in my LCD on the cam but this not the case..I assume if I were using a or had a 16:9 editing monitor every thing would look normal?
Do I have to set the 16:9 format in project settings before I record/dump video footage into my solitaire?

TRUE with a BUT: If you set the DVD player to LETTERBOX, it will play in a 16:9 aspect ratio on a 4:3 TV with black bars on top and bottom.

YES and NO.....see above. ARABESK does not have a FLAG to communicate with the DVD player or does the PANASONIC standalone burners. The viewer must set his or her DVD player to LETTERBOX. Viewer must be MENU savy..

I was expecting to see the letter boxing border on a 4:3 monitor just like in my LCD on the cam but this not the case..

CORRECT...that is NEVER the case.

That is the proper way to edit ANAMORPHIC projects.

Do I have to set the 16:9 format in project settings before I record/dump video footage into my solitaire?

I do, AND you must set up ARABESK in the CONTROL area to 16:9 as well.
