Lip Synch off by 16 frames.

Post by RonaldPawlak »

O.K. all you wizards, what am I doing wrong. If things aren't working right I usually blame myself.

My problem is the audio is not lined up properly with the video, It is off by 16 frames. How do I know?
We were in Canada, a man was demonstrating shoot one of those old rifles they use in the 1800's.
When he pulled the trigger I heard the bang, they 16 frames later I saw the shot, (the flames come out of the barrel).

Even when he was talking directly to the camera, the lip synch was way off. I heard the sound then saw his lips form the word.

I am used 2.3e software, shooting with a HD ACHVD camera, transfer the footage to the S4000-Pro using the USB cable
input. Project set up for HD, following the directions from the Casablanca Expert printout 11/3/09. I have done one other
project and noticed the same thing, but it wasn't that critical. It also states when setting up, "you must select MTS
in the lower right corner of the project settings window, rather that the default HDV". What is MTS

I thought the problems was because I converted it to SD. I converted one HD project to SD, burned a DVD and had
the same results. A person hit a glass container on a rock and you could see him hit the rock and heard the sound a
few frames later. I checked the footage on the camera and the lip synch was right on. I have two long programs coming up.

Is this sound sync off when played back from the scene bin/storyboard, or from some other situation??

Sorry if it is my confusion here:

.MTS means Multi Transport Stream

.HDV for our purposes is MPEG-2 compression.

.Are you importing via BOGART HD USB ICON?

Don't understand how MTS would be set up for importing from a camera.

Hello.

MTS is set only if you are importing from a solid state memory card ( AVCHD) you don't click it if you are importing from tape. So according to you post, you are using an AVCHD camcorder so that is the correct setting for you to use.

Sorry, but I must oppose.
In "Project Settings" the choice of HDV or MTS in lower right hand corner has nothing to do with
importing footage to your scene bin.
This function is exclusively reserved for backup or restoring the storyboard of projects to or from ext. drives.
So it really doesn't matter if it's set to HDV or MTS when you are importing footage from Cam or Deck.
The choice for importing footage will only be made by selecting via the red record button.
Either HDV, DV or MTS via USB-Record.

Thus Ronald's off-sync problem can't be solved by switching between HDV or MTS.
There must be other reasons for his problem.

Agree.......that's what is confusing me here. I am wondering if he is re-importing via MTS as that is another way to save SB projects-a little known fact actually. I am sure Jim meant AVCHD as he is giving the correct import procedure..

O.K. All you wizards, here is the deal. The camera is one of those palm cameras called the Canon V1X1A HF-S10. I know Lou, your probably saying "what did he buy that piece of crap for'? But I like it when I travel, it's small, compact, shoots great video and excellent photos and it's easy to get through airports. Bad thing is, it's so easy to steal. Well anyway I done a test, and here is what I done.

I took the camera and put in on the tripod pointing close up to my face. Now I know why it's better that I'm behind the camera. Shot some video of me talking,
then doing the aphabet slowly and also counted up to ten. Took the footage and recorded to the S-4000 Pro using the MTS and HDV setting in the projects, and it made no difference. However, everything was in sync. Go Figure. So what I'll do is reload the footage of the guy shooting the gun using different settings and see what happens. I even tried it in the single monitor mode, works great.

Jim Meeker the footage was loaded directly from the camera to the 4000 using a USB cable, that's only way I can get the footage imported into the editor

Yes Lou I was importing via Bogart HD USB icon

Bob Foester the sound sycn is off no matter if I was trimming; in the story board; in the scene bin; with two or single monitor mode, except in the camea. I tried all the different kinds of play back. I will keep you posted , as the saga continues.

WOW!! Why did you buy that piece of garbage of a camera?

OH WAIT!!!! I own the same camera plus the HF S11.......all kidding aside, those cameras are THE BEST consumer cameras on the market.

I have used the HF S10 and now the HF S11 w/o any problems with lip synch. The only thing I can think of is that the card was still buffering a SHORT scene and then the camera record button was pushed once more before the scene was completed. Other than that, I have used the camera for parties w/o a hitch. Curious....is your setting at the highest setting like it should be?

I had to laugh at your response about the camera being a piece of crap, glad you took it as a joke. I know you use so many professional camera in your work. For now, I'm going to watch how I shoot with this camera. Maybe it was just like you said about the camera still buffering when I press the record button. I can always shift the audio in the sound section. I'm in the learning stages about the use of HD and all of it's particularities. Getting ready for the shift to HD when it comes.

OK, so I edited my own wedding video shot in HDV witn a Canon HV30 on my Renommee. Recorded the finished video back ot tape in HDV. When I got my S4100, I loaded the HDV video to burn on Blu Ray. The lip synch was off. I don't know why. Anyways, thanks to this thread, I just added 17 frames of silence to the beginning after making a scene - sample of the sound track. Problem solved - sound synch's up. Who knows why these things happen. At least they are easy to fix !!
