I checked his cameras and non were HD.....................................Hummm.................................
I am wondering if he is feeding the signal to his deck first (copy) then importing the scene to the project from his deck.. That COULD account to NO SPLITS.
What did I do wrong?

If you are passing your signal (daisy chain) through the deck that would probably screw up the cut recognition, but if you are simply playing back the tape with the deck it should work.
Go into System Settings, Additional Settings, Cut recognition.
There are only two choices of cut recognition.
Change it from what it is on to the other and record a bit of footage that spans where you know you had a pause/stoppage and then test the Auto-Split with that.
If Auto-Split works for this test piece the setting was your problem as I said.
The good news is the problem is solved for your situation.
The bad news is you need to re-input all the footage with it set this way to use Auto-Split with the footage.

While I am dumping this stuff are you guys famuliar with the Mackie 1202 mixer. If so is the phones jack line or mic level. What is the main out. on another post I think I have a miss match with my wireless. Bob..

Now it gets binding. I discovered that I had the audio cables and the YC still hooked up. I put the recognition back on startcode and tried to dump more footae into the editor without the YC and audio cables, and lo-n-behold I have no signal. it was getting its signal from th Y?C all the time. So I either have a bad firewire cable or I have a setting in the wrong place. The cable is brand new. I got it last week and I took it out of its package. Scatching my noddle!!!!

Strange, try inputting using your PD170 to see if the problem is at the play in or the record in of the chain.
As for the the headphone jack on the mixer, it wouldn't be line level which is used to drive the big stuff (CD player, etc) at 200 millivolt, but probably a bit more than mic level.

Bob,
If it was getting the signal from the YC connection then it is set to YC.
The unit does not auto see or auto connect with firewire, you have to switch it from Analog YC to DV in Video input.
