New problem1
I have developed a new problem. I am trying to download video to my Cassie via firewire and I have noticed audio start to come in under everything. I seem to always have a line at the bottom moving continually but the audio seems to have creeped in and when I look at the video the audio seems to be out of sync with the lips. Anyone else experienced this? The audio seems ok when I play it back in the Cassie. Bob....

sometimes, when you begin downloading footage from your camera into your Cassie and press record right away, the audio may look out of sync as you're watching it download. As long as you can play it back in the scene bin and on the storyboard and the video and audio are correctly in sync, you shouldn't have a problem. It's good practice to let the video play for a few seconds before you press the record on your Cassie.

Re: New problem1
Hi Bob
Do you have what looks like a sync line at the bottom when you are downloading? I didn't notice the audio coming in till abot 30 minutes into my program. when it started it didn't look like the audio was synced but it looks good in the scene bin. I have been editing with cassies for 10 years or so, but I just started inputing with firewire. I have uesd YC till just 2 weeks ago. I don't see much difference with the video if any, but someone said I was loosing about 100 lines of resolution and thats significant. Maybe its just a digital artifact. It doesn't seem to be bothering anything. Thanks Bob...

Re: New problem1
It did it again. 32 minutes into my program the underlying audio came in and the sync looks like its off but in the scene bin after its ok. I have looked at all the settings I can think of and I can't find anything set wrong. Hasn't anyone else experienced this? It seems like it isn't really hurting anything but when it starts I can't monitor my audio at all. it is repeating everything thats said and they are close enough that it just makes the audio sound like jiberish. Re: New problem1
Hello Bob,
When you use the firewire transfer, you will need to shut down the audio coming from the camcorder as it's audio will be playing out loud as the image plays......but when it goes into the Cassie the video and the audio are digitaly processed differently and the audio coming out of your monitor will be terribly out of sync with what you are hearing from the camcorder's speaker. There is a natural delay in the time it takes to process the audio which is different that the time it takes to process the video. This is only noticeable if you are listening to both the camcorder's output and the recorder's output of audio at the same time. Just shut the camcorder's speaker off and all will be well.
When it is put together by the Cassie and placed in the scene bin the audio and video are then in sync as you play them. This has always been the case with DV being transferred via fire wire. You wouldn't have noticed this time delay when transferring with S-VHS and audio being transferred via RCA connections.
It's just the nature of the digital signals. But the advantages of better image quality and Auto Split make it a winner for everyone who has ever tried firewire transfers into a Cassie. So enjoy firewire, it is a valuable tool for all of us.

Re: New problem1
Hi Jim
I have noticed that with YC as well as Firewire. I am not going back to YC for sure. That isn't what it is. I have my HD 700 audio turned way down all I am listening to is the Cassie. I have another program Downloading now and its 25 minutes in and it hasn't done it at all. It is strange... Bob...

Hello Bob:
like Jim said, your audio is not really out of sync with the video. It just looks that way when you are downloading it. it has something to do with the processing speed. It takes about a second to download it and then process it.
The first couple of times it happened to me, I thought I had a problem also, but when I reviewed the scene in the scene bin, the audio and the video were in sync, the way they were supposed to be. The best thing to do is just to ignore it, or you'll drive yourself crazy. And no, I haven't noticed a line when I'm downloading, at least not that I know of.

Hi Bob
You guys aren't understanding me I guess. I probably am not explaining it right. I just got done with a program and it ran 28 minutes and it ran in with out a hitch. Both times it has happened it has run in beautifully till 30 to 33 minutes in and it sounds terrible. Its not just a little delay its double audio coming out of the Cassie. This ain't my first rodeo, I have been doing this for 27 years. 10 with Cassies. I know what a digital delay is and this ain't it. Be lieve me!!

Bob:
the way I understood the problem, is that when you are downloading some footage you shot into your Cassie it sounded like your audio was out of sync with your video. After your download finished, you played back the scene in the scene bin and discovered that everything seemed to be okay. If that's the case, that's normal for our Cassie's. You might want to try downloading that same footage, from that same camera, only using your Y/C Jack, the way you used to and see if the problem re-occurs. I have a prestige, and I download footage using VX -- 2000 camera. I have noticed that my audio seems to be out of sync with the video but when I play the scene back, all is okay. I have never found that the audio really is out of sync with the video. It just appeared to be during the download procedure, so I just ignore it.
However, on the other hand, if after the 28 or 30 minute mark you notice that something seems to be wrong, and after the download procedure you play the scene back, and there is a problem. The audio is out of sync with the video, that's another issue. If this is the case, I would try downloading your footage from one of your other cameras, or try using another FireWire cable.

Re: New problem1
I have the answer to all of this.
Just walk away when you load your footage in your machine and use the timer function.
Do something else with your time than watching it go in.
When I have to load in 3 hours of footage, I do more fun stuff in the mean time.
During editing I review the footage more times than I sometimes like
so to see it an extra time is just a bit to much for me.
Bob This all is ment in a good way.
PS. I have also never had my audio out of sync when loading it by firewire.
