I would disagree that SDE is not practical with our systems as I have done several.

They are certainly more stressful and take quite a bit of pre-planning, but that is true regardless of what editing system you are using.

The trick is creating something of a template on the Storyboard prior to the actual day with a previously chosen audio bed and a shot list at least in your head of the scenes you will be needing.

Then it is a relatively simple matter of inputting the footage and Split/Trimming it to fit the Storyboard Scene template you have already established and adding/mixing the ambient audio where you feel it appropriate and advantageous.

Any SDE requires either additional staffing and/or enough time factors between what parts of the day you are including in the SDE and when it is going to be shown.

This market is increasing and the high end is where the money and repeat referral business is in it.

Most of those I know doing SDE work are doing it in DV even though shooting HDV or HD.

Franklin, with HDV cams the downconvert is real time as it is being input into the editor so is not a deteriment to the process.

Yes I agree Tim it is doable...maybe I should say NOT as practical for me...
with a MAC laptop and FCP its just easier to do in my humble opinion... I personally prefer our editing platform
to FCP so I'm not gonna go there !

And here I was thinking that same day edit was to finish the DVD in full packaged burned and printed and just ready to go and NO other editing to be done for that couple.
I think you guys are talking about a 5 to 10 mins highlights video from the day.
Not that I would attempt that either to stress full for my liking and just no time.
From the start of the ceremony till dinner it is just go go go and I am pretty good at multitasking but this is just to much to ask.
Wander what smarty bum cam up with that concept to do this same day editing.
I haven't seen any photographers editing and showing off there photo's with in a few hours of shooting they just go home and do it there.
Any one who attempt this I wish you all the best and good luck. :D

I actually think the Storyboard editing method is faster when using a preplanned SDE template than Timeline editing.

I think Timeline editing can be done faster when you are layering footage or adding multiple effects, but for basic assembly editing the simplicity of Storyboard editing shines in efficiency.

Regarding trying to haul around the S4000 versus a laptop is a slam dunk for the laptop though. :D

Yes Jeanton, it is more or less a highlight video with the accent on having some of the ambiant sound of such as the vows involved and shown on a big screen at the reception.

It is a huge referral tool and the biggest instant gratification you could ever experience, but it takes planning, a cool demeanor is handy and certainly can add stress to the day.

Normally, your end product gets seen by a very small contingent of people, an SDE gets seen by a large contingent of people "in the mood" and can result in some really enthusiastic, virtually impulse commitments from ladies and their moms in the "audience" that have weddings coming up within the next year or so. :D

I know a couple of videographers who are offering SDE only packages as an option.

Imagine if you could just take Bogart or Smart Edit and load that on your notebook; you'd be all set for your SDEs. I've greatly limited doing those because of logistics of getting them done and having to lug my big editor along. It does hurt one's business since it is such a powerful marketing tool and others using FCP, Vegas, etc. are pumping these out all the time. Unfortunately, it sometimes seems that MacroSystem is stuck in a 1997 business-model mindset; sure would be nice if some real big changes came this year.

I agree with John if Macro Systems just make the Smart Edit available for PC's there would be a bigger market for the product.
At the moment the average home user who isn't using the system wouldn't pay this kinda money for an editing system that only just does editing.
Don't get me wrong - I love this machine but it has it's limitations in titling and graphics.
If people could see the learning curve on one of our systems it could have a huge potential if only they didn't have to buy the hardware.
I often tell people that I could teach them to make a basic video within an hour of me showing (some people are just happy with a basic video)
they are amazed because they spend more time just working out how to import footage let alone trim or split the footage.
The software is so good they should market it for PC use.

The S-4000 Pro will most likely be my last machine that I buy from them after stuffing us around (and making false promises). In the future I will have a look at Apple
as you get so many more features included in the software - if I had to buy that software all from Macro Systems it would cost me a fortune.
I would like to see how many NEW customers Marco System attract every year - I don't think there are many and you need them to survive.
Here in Australia we don't have many Macro System users.

Sorry this had nothing to do with SDE or maybe a little

Depends alot on the shoot conditions. I produced a SDE once by treating it like a live broadcast. Two cams fed a switcher which fed into my cassie live. Takes a crew to pull this off including 2 cam operators, switcher operator, director at a min.

You can feed a couple of wireless mics into the switcher too...sweet.

Be sure to be taping also for backup.

Was fun and worked great!....but stressful
