Casablanca Kron asking for System SM Card
Hi... I dont' know if I should be using this forum or not given the nature of my question but here goes.
I have a Casablanca Kron machine that had version 2.5 software on it. I had purchased the device second hand from a company my father worked for. After seeing that there was new software for the machine I decided to burn an upgrade disc and try to go to version 4.
After discovering that the upgrade wasn't covered by the license to the software on the machine I tried to shut it down before doing anything else. Now the machine is asking for a Smartmedia with the System data on it and a 6 digit number: "524288" and wont' go back to what it origianlly was.
According to my dad, there never was a Smartmedia with the original device and it was all loaded off of DVD.
I'm really stuck. Do I have a way of fixing this or am I stuck with a very expensive paperweight? PLEASE HELP!

Re: Casablanca Kron asking for System SM Card
Which part of the software were you attempting to upgrade?
The Smart Edit operating system is up to version 8.3, while the DVD burning software is up to version 4.x
Version 4 of the Arabesk DVD burning software requires at least version 5 of the Smart Edit operating system.
Suggest you have Clark Kent contact the Macro System office in Boulder ( 877.554.2846) to register the machine and to see if they can send you a Smart Media card with the 2.5 Smart Edit operating system on it and a list of all of the unlock codes for software that is registered to your machine. Have the serial number of the machine handy.
I had a situation where even with the unlock code the machine froze up when I tried some kind of upgrade. I had to contact MSUS in Colorado to get a Smart Media card, which solved the problem.

Re: Casablanca Kron asking for System SM Card
Thank you Craig.
I was acctually trying to upgrade the SMART EDIT program itself, which was version 2.5 even though I had a version 3.0 manual.
But I think the machine was already registered to my fathers company. Like I said. I purchased it second hand after they closed their video department. I don't know if selling the machine also transfers the original license. I just hope this works.

I don't think it should be too much of a problem. There have been a great many improvements to the operating system over the years, so you may want to consider upgrading to the most recent OS - but the machine will need 256 MB of RAM. I'm not sure if the original Kron came with 64 or 256 MB.
Smart Edit 9 is very close to being released in the US.

Checking the machine's start up screen. It's a "Kron Plus" which checking, I belive means it has the 256 stick in it.

256 MB is correct. I own a Kron Plus which I purchased used and then registered to myself.

Thank you Craig. You have been a great help (not to mention getting the secret of my username. Kudos to you)
I just hope that the cost for the stuff wont' be too much.

Re: Casablanca Kron asking for System SM Card
I would be surprised if there was not a SmartMedia card with the Kron when purchased, but as they are rarely needed they do get misplaced. Prior to SmartEdit 4, Series II Casablanca cannot read a CD without having Arabesk installed. If you carry out a full installation you will lose all the add-on software including Arabesk. Without Arabesk you cannot use the CD to install Arabesk, so we have a vicious circle. We would always write Arabesk to the Operating System SmartCard for this reason. On these early versions of SmartEdit you should not need any of the the licence numbers to re-install any of the products previously licensed. The code you saw top right of the screen is an engineers diagnostic code which usually only appears after changing RAM or other bits and pieces.
Sometimes when there is a failed operating system installation Casablanca seems to lose its way and can no longer find the original o/s to boot up from. If this happens it will ask for the Operating System SmartMedia card and may then shut down if you don't provide it. This is what appears to happening here. You will need to aquire a Smartcard with both the o/s and Arabesk to get started again. Once these are installed you can use the All Software /Add-on Software CD to re-install any other programs.
You may have an added complication with this Kron Plus in that there may be two hard drives installed. If you obtain a card and still have problems with installation come back and request some more assistance.

Re: Casablanca Kron asking for System SM Card
One very important caution for when you get everything up and running
The firewire connection is not one that you can "Hot Swap".
I always make sure that the editor and whatever is connected at the other end are both off before disconnecting. If you don't you run the risk of blowing out the firewire interface card in the editor - an expensive repair.
Let us know how you make out.
And free to use your real name You'll find this be the "friendliest place on the web".

Re: Casablanca Kron asking for System SM Card
Actually I spoke with my father earlier this morning. He managed to do some rummaging in the old editing suite and studio and found ALL of the Smartmedia cards for the Kron. With any luck the O/S and Arabesk cards are there as well.
And no there is not a second hard drive installed
*EDIT* OK I got the thing working again! (YAY)...but when I was installing the "All Software" SM card it asked me to eject and reboot the machine. Which I did. But when it came back up the machine is asking for the System card again and giving me the 6 digit error code (BOO!)
What's really strange is that if I start the machine with the System disc in the drive, it says there is NO HARD DRIVE TO INSTALL TOO.... Which really freaks me out. Any ideas anyone?
