Border Problem on Transitions
I am in the process of downloading various video projects from my Prestige to the S-4100 I recently purchased. When I worked on these projects with the Prestige, I was using (foolishly, I now believe) just a regular small TV that was in the traditional 4x3 aspect and the videos looked fine. As I am now transferring and checking the finished videos with a wide screen HDTV I have noticed that on some transitions a black border is there at the beginning of the transition and then disappears as the transition is completed. This "disappearing border" obviously is somewhat distracting on a wide screen TV and was wondering if anyone can tell me 1) What I did wrong when originally creating the video, and 2) Whether I can do anything now that would eliminate the problem. I should state that these are in most cases finished video projects and I would not have access to the original scene bins or storyboards to recreate the video.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Re: Border Problem on Transitions
Dale,
Recently someone seemed to be having a bug related to this, but normally it is controlled by the Image size the Project is set to.
I recommend setting Project Image to Large or Full.
You can try Remove, then (re) Add the Scenes and do the same with the Transitions, then Render (Create) and perhaps that will fix your issue.
I would also suggest going into System Settings and check box the Border setting (Black Border or Cover Border).
Lastly, if you have the right IP Effects pack you can Add Black Border to the Storyboard (or use the same in Special to the individual involved Scenes), then Replace the existing ones with the modified ones, Remove and Add the Transitions and Create and see if that fixes your issue.
Or supply a small 4:3 tv with every DVD.

Re: Border Problem on Transitions
I am still encountering problems in downloading the videos from my Prestige to the S-4100 and trying to do away with the "disappearing border" problem.
When the video is played from the storyboard on the Prestige, the video looks fine and there is no problem with the border. However, when I go to the Finish menu on the Prestige to play the video for output to the S-4100 the problem still occurs. I have changed the image setting to "Full" and also enabled the black border on the presentation options. Is it possible to output directly from the storyboard to the S-4100 and hopefully bypass this problem, since it appears only when playing the video on the Finish menu? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or comments.

Re: Border Problem on Transitions
Dale,
You can transfer video from the Prestige to the 4100 by playing the program on the Prestige's storyboard, however this can only be done via s-video or composite video - not firewire. Using the Presentation options in the Prestige you would turn off the counter and turn on Black Border.
You would set the project in the 4100 to Large or Full, then change the video input on the 4100 to match the output of the Prestige (S-Video is preferable).
There are two Black Border functions in Casablanca software. One is in Presentation Options and is used for playing back from the storyboard. It doesn't change your project, it only adds the black border as the storyboard is being played by the editor.
The other Black Border is an Image Processing effect that is part of Effects Pack 8. You would apply this to the storyboard and then render it. The one advantage here is that with this method you would be able to firewire the footage between editors if you ran it on the footage in the Prestige. I don't know if that method would be superior to firewiring the footage from the Prestige first and then running Black Border in Image Processing in the 4100.
I don't know if MacroSystem ever came out and said if there was a difference in the width of the border itself or any other differences or advantages that one implementation of Black Border has over the other.

Re: Border Problem on Transitions
Is this occurring with footage you have inputted after switching the image size to Large or Full?
Out of curiosity what cam is the footage shot with?

Re: Border Problem on Transitions
Craig and Tim,
Thank you for your responses.
Craig if I am not able to solve the problem, I may well use your suggestion to transfer the footage with the s-video connection.
Tim, I am still having the problem after changing the image size to Large or Full. Most of the original footage was shot with a Sony VX 2000.
Thanks again for your help and if you have any other ideas that you think might remedy the problem and allow me to use the finish screen and the firewire connection, please let me know.

Re: Border Problem on Transitions
Were the original projects shot and edited in the Prestige in 4:3 aspect ratio or 16:9?

Craig,
I believe they were edited in 16x9 but at this point in time I'm not sure.

Dale,
Are you PAL or NTSC. I recall this is an issue from a prior post on the Great Britain Listserve. Perhaps check the archives?
