Bogart to You tube (long)

(Be patient, there is a happy ending) Due to motion box being replaced by Snapfish, I needed to move a demo video to another location since I did not agree to Snapfish's terms. You Tube was an obvious choice since there were several help articles on How To. Rather than trying to re-invent the wheel, as a member of Chet's website, I downloaded the written instructions on uploading to You Tube. I followed them to the letter as near as could tell. The project is a 6:35 HD video in 1440 X 1080i format. After transferring to MM archives, I noticed the audio was correct, but the video was jerky and seemed to be playing back at less than real time. Next was to transfer the video to a Kingston 2gb USB drive choosing YOU TUBE, MPEG4, etc., etc according to the instructions. The video uploaded after a couple of hours. The video playback was OK but there was only about 4 seconds of audio that broke up and quit. Next, I watched Chet's on line video and noted that he converted the Bogart video to 720 progressive before moving to MM. I did that. The converted scene still read 1440 X 1080i when checking the info button for that converted scene. I re-did the project and ended up with the same previous results. This time I checked the video on the USB drive and determined that the audio was already messed up before up-loading. I tried numerous combinations of conversions, MPEG4 - H264 - HG - OlD You Tube - You Tube. No change. Next, I watched Chet's instruction on his MM DVDs. Still no change. It was like trying to pick a lottery number. All the choices had to be the correct one of the many available and so far I hadn't hit the right combination. I know your time is short, so here is the bottom line after 3 days of of failure. I took the original project and moved it to a new project location using the setting of HD, 1280 X 720P. By following Chet's instructions to choose "High" in Bogart, uncheck "MPEG" conversion, I got an acceptable transfer to MM Archives. Using You Tube, MPEG4 conversion, the Kingston uploaded to You Tube with sound. HOWEVER, the play back was intermittent with long pauses for further downloading to my computer. I uploaded to exact file from the USB drive to "Vimeo" and FINALLY got the the desired results of a video that would play back without hesitation. The secret seemed to be changing the project to HD 1280 X 720P from HD 1440 X 1080i. This is a video some of you may have seen. it is at: http://vimeo.com/14563885

I noticed that you said you "unchecked" the MPEG conversion. This must always be cheked ON or else the audio will drop out completely. If your video is less than 5 minutes, then you can use the HDV project backup method. Go to project settings, and select storyboard backup, then choose media (thumb drive or DVD) then name the project and it will render and save the story board. Then simply pop the dic or flash drive into a PC and transfer the clip to your desktop or folder, then select the file for uploading to youtube. One very good thing about you tube, is they now allow up to 15 min videos before you have to split them into PT 1 PT 2 etc. If you have a 12 or 15 min clip, I utilize media manager and check MPEG convert to "On" then I use the 1270 X 1080 You Tube HD drop down choice. That's how I was able to upload the "LDBC Introductory" video to my you tube channel and the quality is very good.

Thanks for the detailed explanation of your success. I have heard that using the correct project setting, particularly in the new Bogart V3.x Operating System is very important (particularly with the different project resolutions possible in the variety of new camcorders).

Also, adding the checkmark in the MPEG setting in Archives is something that has changed with the release of subsequent versions of the Bogart OS (with the initial Bogart/Media Manager/Archives setting, colleagues found greater success with the box un-checked - that now has changed with the success occurring with the check-mark in place).

Also, if you are export an HD project - from Bogart OS - several in our community report the best success exporting to flash media then importing to online video hosting website by using the Storyboard Archives function in the Project Settings Menu (with HDV selected as Mode).

Thanks for the update Chet. Is there still a 5 minute limit on HD projects as indicated by JBrooks? My project is 6:36. This still doesn't address the problem I experienced of the hesitating down load play back on You Tube and not on Vimeo. Any ideas there? Both were loaded off the same USB drive with the exact same file.

I don't want to be a "spoiled-sport" here, but I never had good luck using Media Manager. Chet is correct in regards to the audio issues. Past versions worked fine while other versions did not when either the MPEG area was checked ON or left blank.


Here is my advice that never failed me....not even once.

Use the project setting and SAVE the SB as HDV.....NOT MTS.......MTS, takes too long to render. Don't use Media Manager for exporting to Vimeo or You Tube. Save yourself a headache as the exports are finicky. That is my experience.

Below is my project over 6:26 minutes long. Engage the HD mode in the lower right corner and load it up. You may have seen it already but I am trying to prove that longer videos are not an issue on YOU TUBE:

I will definitely give it a try Lou. I don't upload a lot of videos, but I would like to get the procedure down so that I can when I want to. If I can get it right, I will probably upload more content. Thanks to all who have responded.

Lou, I did the save story board direct to USB drive as HDV using 1440 x 1080i footage. I put the USB drive in the computer and dragged the file to the desk top. It was a 1.2 gb file. The 6:36 min program to about 9 HOURS to upload to You Tube. The footage was shot on a Sony single CMOS camera and the video has a LOT of movement. Long story short, the You Tube version stops and waits for more data about every 15 seconds. The Vimeo site plays all the way thru and actually gains on the progress bar. I doubt anyone is willing to put up with all the waiting to see the video. Did your aviation video take anywhere near that long to upload? Any suggestions that might have been left out on your reply post? Compression? Conversion? etc.? Thanks. Bob F.

YIKES!!!!!!!The aviation video took about 30 minutes. AND....there is lots of motion. Something is very wrong. Could it be your PC is an older PC?

I did the same as you....dragged to the desktop....opened YOU TUBE.........uploaded for 30 minutes..........it took a short time for the YOU TUBE rendering to produce a pristine picture. YOU TUBE will have to buffer HD. One must wait initially. However, after a few views, all is well. Hummm.......good luck.
