Avio hookup problems

Post by bhnavideo »

I have the old Avio that I just had repaired @ factory. Anyway, I have hooked up per manual & get NO video signal. The Avio menu is on but NO matter what I try I get NO video signal. I've checked & rechecked & my TV (Monitor) is correctly set.
My YC settings are correct. I've switched cables just in case of a bad one.

I go out of player (tried DVD & A VCR) into Avio (In only-permanet plugins Rt. side) out of Avio (scart-set on out) into monitor (TV). I'm not even trying Burner hookup as I can't get to editing yet.

If I plug the player into the same scart I have monitor I get a jumbled picture with Avio menue & the video.

Not sure if this is half way clear to anyone.

Any suggestions? e-mail to ahunter55@hotmail.com
Thanks,
John
P.S. I am definatly NOT a wizard at this stuff.

If you connect your player via S-video to your Avio, then your Video Setting/Input should be set to YC. Be sure you're going OUT from player and IN on Avio.
Connecting via rca cable would require you to set the video input for CVBS.

Are you plugging into the Avio SCART? Is it set for Input? Do you have the option of plugging directly into S-Video or RCA connectors on the Avio? If so, be sure you are using INPUT.

When set correctly, you should be able to see/hear your signal from the Video Setting screen. You will need to go to the record screen to record.

Loooong time since I had an Avio with 1.8 but maybe this will help.

The video output is set in the System Settings menu. I always used both Scarts as outputs. The top one only gives you composite out - the bottom one can give you composite or S-Video out. Make sure they are both switched to Out. I always used the inputs on the right side of the back panel of the Avio.

The video input is set in the Video Settings menu. The button to select the input type is located under the sliders for Brightness, Contrast, and Saturation. I always used the top two choices - either the CVBS for composite or YC for S-Video. You didn't say how you are trying to bring the audio and video into the Avio. If you are trying S-Video, make sure that you haven't bent or broken one of the pins on the cable.

S-video hookup.
1-Input is set to YC 2-Out of player directly into Avio (Rt. side back, says input only) S Video cable.
3-top scart set to output-RCA cable into Monitor (no S video on Monitor)

I can see my Avio screen but there is No Video Signal message.
I push record & get the X (can't do symbol)

CKnewman
1-Using both scarts
2-Both set to output.
3-setting is YC for S-Video
All cables are good-I've even switched them just in case

I will try again today & start from scratch..

Thanks for helping.

John,

Ok, so you have no problem seeing the GUI (graphic user interface), aka: the Avio editing menu, it's video input you are not seeing, correct?

You need to set your input choice of s-video because it defaults to the RCA input.

From the main menu, select Video Settings and then click on the button at the bottom of the menu labeled "Input" and this will cause a drop down menu choice to appear with YC (s-video) and CVBS (RCA).

Switch it to YC and you should be in business.

PS - This and much more is explained in very simple and graphic terms in the manual and in case you don't have that any more here is a hyperlink to download it via PDF courtesy of Carroll Lamb's Clamcam website.

Success.
When they worked on it at the factory they had set it on DV. I changed to YC & everything works. My hookups were correct to start. Thanks for helping. I knew you fellas would know how to show a novice how to get an antique going...

I do little editing anymore but I have a ton of video to transfer to DVD to save them.. Thanks again.

I also have many hours of my Bowhunting journey (video) spanning over 50 years I am putting into a story (25 years of video/film & the rest in photos).

Again, thanks

Glad you were successful! :P We were all singing the same "tune" but Tim had the unabridged version! Good luck!

When I first came on the BB many, many years ago I would answer people stumped by something with a brief answer.

Then a certain older gentleman most of you know would give the same answer in depth (as in step by step) and I would think, what the heck that's what I already said.

It took a while to sink in that they thanked him and not me because even though we both gave the same answer his actually helped them because they could follow and understand it.

That brought me to the realization that if they understood my shorthand they probably already understood the process they were asking about and would not have needed to ask the question in the first place.

So, credit ti Jim Meeker for teaching me to use the unabridged answer as it is the stumped person's favorite one hands down. 8-)

Hello Tim and Everyone,

Ah yes, I remember the beginning days of the forum when we were all learning how to use these new digital editors. It was quite a process to figure out after having used analog linear tape to tape editing. I was so slow to learn that I had to have easy step by step instructions so that I could understand it at all. So when I tried to answer someone else's question ....I knew it had to be step by step and do this because of that...etc. and then it might make sense to someone else.

We figured out that there was a correct order to do things when editing on a Casablanca. We had to do the video first, then the inserts and transitions and titles.......and then and only then, when we were happy with the video, we could then start the audio tracks. In the first machines, if you moved a scene, or shortened a scene, the image moved away from the audio and it would come unrendered and you had to re-do all the audio just because you changed one video scene's length or position.

Then we found out what the importance of making a SCENE of our work was, and how much more creative we could be once the two video streams were saved into one stream and recorded on the hard drive instead of still just in two places in the memory. If they were still in memory and not actually recorded on the hard drive, any move in scene length or position would unrender and our work would evaporate into the ether. ( or some dark graveyard of digital mistakes)

The later software gives us the option of having the audio tracks move forward if we add a new scene to the beginning of our sequence, and we now have the choice of locking audio to clips in the storyboard which saves a lot of time in editing. These things where not available when Tim and I were first learning storyboard editing on the Casablanca.

Thank you Tim for remembering those early days when we began helping others learn the Cassie. Thank you also for giving me the credit for changing the way that you answered questions on the forum. That coming for one as brilliant as you means a great deal to me.

I still have and saved Mr. Meeker's AVIO response to Lou Bruno from 1999. The most I understood at that point was WEB TV.

Mr. Meeker's advice to Lou:

Lou, place in this order

Scenes

Inserts

Transitions

Titles

Audio

Audio should always be last.

We sure had some journey since then. I have much respect for Jim Meeker for all the help he gave me, as a rookie, and others through the years.
