envelope, audio editing

Post by fowler »

I recorded an interview with very low sound. I increased the sound level to the max, and it would be good except for a high buzz in the background. Is there a way to eliminate or diminish that sound? I'm not sure what "envelope" does and the manual doesn't explain it.

Fowler,

You likely are aware that with every recording there is undesirable audio called 'noise'. When we record quality audio at a 'good' level it is far enough apart from this noise that we don't hear it so much. But if we record our primary audio too low, when we raise the desired audio up to hear it well, we are also raising up the undesirable 'noise'.

Audio envelope is used primarily to perform precise 'surgeries': to lower volume of particular sounds or whole sequences, etc. You can even use it to entirely mute an offensive sound/word.

I believe you are looking for more of a filter - to diminish a particular sound or frequency. This can be done mildly with the 'Filter' function found in the Audio Effects Pack (add-on software for both Smart Edit & Bogart OS). If it is more substantive work that is required you might consider exporting your audio track and using software in your computer like Sound Forge or Audicity.

Hope that helps!

Chet

Audicity, Chet? You probably mean Audacity. I just downloaded Total Recorder to re-save a wav as an mp3. Its good for the same type gig.

That's correct Jim, Audacity is the correct software product. Would you believe I mis-spelled it on purpose to see who was reading closely? ;)
