audio question

Post by flvideo »

I have a scene wher the audio is low and bassy. I can raise the level in the mix screen but it is still bassy to the point you can't understand the words they are saying. I see in the audio record/edit screen on the top left where is says sound, I click on it and it has another screen that says trebel and Bass. I have tryed the sliders and it doesn't seem to have any effect on the audio on that scene. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks Bob...

Hello Bob,

The 'Tone Control' you mention (Bass & Treble) only affect the signal that is being recorded into your Casablanca -- that does not modify any audio that is already in your editor. To do that you would need to use the Audio Effects Pack (or for someone on a Bogart V3 system - you could use the 10-Band EQ) both of these are found in the Special button in the Audio Record/Edit Menu. NOTE: Audio Effects Pack is an add-on software product.

Hope that helps.

Chet

Ok Chet I can see that but how do I get there when I have tape running in? I tried that but it is not an option. I made a scene sample of the audio thinking I cvould effect that but that didn't work either. I am using SE with version 7.0

Maybe it would help to run it through an equalizer on the way into the editor to compensate for the missing high end? An audio specialist could speak better to this.

Hmm - it was my understanding (and still is based on what I just read in the Owners Manual) that you _should_ be able to influence the Bass/Treble +/- 12dB using this tone control on whatever sound source is selected for recording (Mic, Front or Read inputs). But you are apparently not experiencing this... sorry, don't know why that would not work for you.

I just found your response Chet. I had to have the piece done so I took that scene out. I just couldn't figure out how to repair it. I spent a ton of time on it. I tried hooking up my Macky and I had connection problems. I tried to go thru the tape in and tape out. I just thought about another way I may have been able to do it. I thought I could use the audio mix screen to input the audio and then sync it back up with the video. Would that work? Bob...

Bob,

I am sorry but I am not certain I understand your proposed method/suggestion - it is my understanding to use the Tone controls in the Audio Record/Edit menu you have to input audio from an external source. The only means of recording/importing directly into the Audio Mix menu is via the VO (VoiceOver) option which (I believe) does not allow access to the Tone Controls.

The easiest method to affect the tone/frequency of an audio sample is to use the Filter function found in the Audio Effects pack. But again that is tricky as audio is an art as well as a science - and when you affect an undesired sound you have to be careful that the desired sound is not at or near the same frequency (because they then both get muted or diminished).

Chet

I think I am the one thats needs to be sorry Chet. Originally I was trying to effect the audio as it went into the editor from DV tape. What I was thinking of was to input the audio into the editor as audio in the Audio record screen like I was playing it from a cd and I still can't get it effected. Its hard to learn something on the Customers nickel. I have delivered it and I got no complaints. Its stuff like that that baffles me thats frustrating. I never was able to figure how it got that way to start with. The camera that recorded that audio is fine and has recorded other jobs since. I gues it was something off their board. There is so many varibles in this business, but I guess thats what makes it interesting. Thank for your help. Bob.......
