Hello All

Is it possible to transfer video from the solitaire to an external hard drive like a 1 tb my book hd?

If so how do you do it and is there a certain hard drive you would use?

The answer depends on what your intention is for/with the video file/s on the external HDD?
There are a couple different forms of backup/archive but straight transfer to an external drive is not so likely with the Solitaire.

What I would like to do is archive the video on the solitaire's hd then delete and import back into solitaire at later time if needed from the external hd.
If that is possible would importing back into the solitaire be faster than original from mini dv tape?

Greg,

The answer would be "No" unless you did some unauthorized modifications.

Without doing that the easiest way to archive full hard drives with the Solitaire would be to purchase extra sleds and just swap out and store the sled/hard drive until you need it again.

Of course, the sleds were ridiculously expensive and I don't know if they are even available any longer.

The next easiest, cheapest and fastest way to archive a full hard drive would be to physically remove and replace the hard drive from the sled and store the original until you need it and then reverse the swap.

The third way would be to use the Solitaire's built in mirror back up process which will archive the drive to the internal hard drive and then swap out that drive with another.

That really isn't hard to do, but requires you to open the Solitaire.

Bobbie Evoy taped me when I was replacing her internal drive and burner and it shows you how to open the Solitaire and replace the internal drive which you can watch here if interested:

As for my mention of unauthorized modifications, while I never tried it I would imaging you coule reroute the internal hard drive to the exterior by replacing the existing ribbon IDE data cable and power cable with longer ones to allow you to bring the internal back up drive outside the unit.

While this would not necessarily be hard or require a doctorate in electronics I still would only suggest doing this if you are very familiar and comfortable working with electronics.

It isn't hard to short a drive or motherboard, etc with static electricity or a bit of carelessness.

If I can jump in here: All newer models can ARCHIVE via the PROJECT window in ANY format. DV, HDV, MTS. One can also ARCHIVE to Media Manager-Import/Export different CODECS which can be read/imported back on the BOGART side using the proper procedure.

One can also IMPORT via the BOGART side any readable files from an external source. Even the the new MXF files for the new Canon XF-300/305. There is more versatility with BOGART...even a full Hard Drive backup that will backup ALL of your projects at once on any given date/time w/o backing up the operating system-unlike the Solitaire etc.

You are welcome and yes, when you use the mirror backup it copies EVERYTHING, what is in the Scene Bin, both original footage and any Scene created Scenes or Special created Scenes as well as the Storyboard, etc.

The Gen3 units can use both Project backup (with some limitations) and Hard Drive backup (with no limitations) to archive directly to USB connected external hard drives.

Project backup is inherent with the Bogart OS, Hard Drive backup requires an optional software, both can be backed up to external hard drives.

Greg I will, while not near as Knowlegeable as the others before, Add my comments. I edit with a Renommee which is similar to the solitare. I have 7 HD's and 3 sleds and I have found the bast way for me to backup and to retrieve at will is to Back up on DV tape. I don't shoot HD yet but I'd suppose you can back up on HD tape as well. I have full year of DV tape with backed up edited footage that seems to be as pristeen as it was when I originally put in in my Renny. I hope this helps you. Bob........
