HISTORY: Last spring I bought a Reno+ with OS 8.1 already installed. I was currently using a Reno+ with OS 6.2c as my primary editing unit. I also had a Prestige with OS 6.2c as a location recording unit and a Prestige with OS 6.2c as a secondary recording unit in the film projection room that also served a a rendering unit when editing multiple long format programs. i.e. 6 hour seminars divided in to 4 segments. After editing 1 segments, I would move the hard drive to the secondary unit to add the film and burn the DVD while I edited the second segment on the primary editor from a second hard drive. Long format programs are usually 4 - 1 1/2 segments or 2 - 1 hour segments and 2 - 2 hour segments.
After purchasing the second Reno+, I decided to retire the secondary Prestige and up grade the 2 Reno + units and the location Prestige to OS 8.3. Initially I did a simple up grade to OS 8.3. I soon ran into the sync problems and decided to to a full destructive install on the hard drives. Because I did not know the history of the recently purchased Reno +, I replaced that drive with one of a know history. I still had the 2 separate sync problems.
Set Up; 2 Sony cameras, PD170 and Z5 feeding an Edirol V4 EFX mixer with S-video cables. S video out of mixer to S video powered Distribution amp. Lines from amp to monitor, Prestige editor, teleconferencing unit, and JVC commercial stand alone DVD burner. Audio snake to front of room mics with outputs to house amp, Prestige, JVC DVD burner and teleconferencing unit from Mackie mixer.
Typically longer scenes of around 2 hours or more exhibited progressive out of sync audio in the scene bin. Starting at about 30 minutes and getting progressively worse to the end. This was very apparent while splitting the scene to add title graphics for each new speaker. Doing a scene sample and changing the range could not correct the progressive problem. Re-recording the scene from the backup up DVD would provide a scene that was in sync from beginning to end in the scene bin. However, when burning the 2+ hour DVD, the video and audio had to be at reduce and compressed quality to fit on the DVD. The result was a DVD that would get progressively out of sync similar to the previous scene problem. As a test, I added the film with reduce video quality but uncompressed audio. The indicator showed a - 6% capacity for the audio. The finished DVD now had in-sync audio all the way to the end where the DVD stopped about 8 minutes from the actual end of the program.
I loaded the same 2 hr 10 minute DVD into an extra HDD that still had the 6.2c OS on it. This was a HDD that I had previously been using for these long format programs, but it had seen a lot of use. The audio was in sync in the storyboard and when I burned a DVD after editing with reduced quality and compressed audio, the DVD audio was in sync for the entire DVD.
Conclusion: The OS 8.3 software was causing the two sync problems. Solution: My hard drives have been destructively installed with the old OS 6.2c software. This is just FYI concerning my audio sync problems. Any comments are welcome.
