Jim,

Seeing as no one, including me really was sure what you were after from your vague description which can be interpreted in several ways I would say you are obviously wrong that your description was "clear enough" to anyone, but you.

Course, then you knew what you were wanting so it should be obvious to you. :D

With your further description I'd say Craig or Ian's would work.

Use Control Image to in Special to create a darker version of your Scene, place them on the Storyboard and use a vertical left to right motion transition such as Smooth Wipe.

If you want it to be dark for a moment before changing and be light for some time after changing use Split to Split each Scene into three segments (stable dark, transition period and stable light).

Make sure whatever durations you choose for the three segments are duplicated on each version.

Place Dark segment #1 on the Storyboard, then Dark segment #2, Light segment #2 and Light segment #3 (discard Dark #3 and Light #1).

Then place the transition between Dark #2 and Light #2 and set the duration to full Scene duration time, Render.

Thanks, Tim. I had the original image in PS2, looking to see if I could darken it there. Finding none, I saved as a scene and threw it into the bin, thinking as you have pointed out, that there is a way in the special menu to do that. Thanks. I will be trying that.

Applied a simple wipe and it wiped. Problem is, I want a horizontal wipe that lasts as long as the scenes involved do- 6 seconds. Is there a way to slow a wipe motion down to last the length of the scenes involved? Thanks.

Jim

Read step 3 of my earlier reply.

Click the time button and set the time for the full duration, i.e. 6secs. It works for a Wipe or in my version, Pusher.

I am assuming you used two scenes of 6 seconds each.

Jim,

As Ian mentioned, set the transition duration to be as long as the Scene, aka: 6 seconds per your description.

If you do this the Scene will end just as it has become completely the light version.

The steps I described would allow you to hold the Scene to stable dark at the beginning and then stable light at the end for a slightly different appearing version of the effect.

I would suggest something like a Split of one second, four seconds, one second.

Just enough time to establish a stable shot of a dark beginning and light ending.

My idea was a direct derivation of Ian's technique for fading a black and white scene into color that he demonstrated long ago in a galaxy far away... or maybe it was Moline several years ago

Start with Ian's step one (slightly modified):

1. Split your scene, first scrolling to the point you want the effect to start (A), click “Use”, scroll for the length of time you want the effect to last and click “Use” (B), and then scroll to the end of the remainder of the scene click “Use” (C). You now have 3 sections of scene, the start, the desired duration of the effect, and the end.

2. Use Control Image to darken clips A and B.

3. Add the darkened clips A and B to the storyboard.

4. Insert the original (lighter) clip B into the darker clip B that is already on the storyboard.

5. Go to the Transitions screen and add the Smooth Color Wipe transition between clips A and B, choose the arrow that points to the right, and set the color and smoothness as desired. Change the duration of the transition to the length of clip B.

6. Add the original clip C.

I thought about it and found that it can be done in fewer steps (no splitting required):

1) Using Control Image, create a darker version of the clip and add it to the storyboard.

2) Insert the original (brighter) clip into the darker version.

3) Using the Range function, select Trim and set the In-Point to where you would like the effect to begin.

4) Go to the Transitions screen and add the Smooth Color Wipe transition between the base clip and the insert. Choose the arrow that points to the right and set the color and smoothness as desired. The lower the % of smoothness you choose, the less blurring of the line (try 0% or 1% for a narrow line). Set the length by clicking on the Transition Duration button under the storyboard, then clicking on the slider that comes up and scrolling to the duration you need.

Ha yes Craig, the very first MGT at Moline, I remember it well, albeit a number of years ago now.

The dreaded black and white to colour demo. This was towards the end of my first three hour demo session and I kept picking up the wrong section of scene from the scene bin to add to the story board, hence I could not get the process to work. All down to jet lag, honest.

You guys did go easy on me though.

None the less a great few days and one I keep telling Jim M, I hope to repeat one year.

Jim, you have certainly received some great and full instructions on how to address the needs for your effect.

I wanted to point out that there _is_ a method to modify the color, etc. of a photo/image in Photo Studio 2:
Click on the 'Filter' button found in the Photo Studio 2 menu,
then click on 'Control photo'.
Under this menu you will find the control sliders to affect:
  • Brightness, Contrast & Saturation
    Gamma
    RGB values
For anyone interested in learning the full capacity and abilities in Photo Studio 2 - you can order my Casablanca Foolproof Volume 4 tutorial DVD: Photo Studio 2 Intensive. This comprehensive tutorial is available from your Casablanca reseller, from MacroSystem US and in the online store at CasablancaExpert.com

Colleagues in the UK can order your copy from Dalco UK
