Bogart 3.2c compatibility with Canon XH-A1 or G1 @24fps HDV

Post by garymcnally »

A customer of mine is considering purchase of the A-1, and is wondering if anybody has successfully digitized HDV tape from the Canon A1 or G1 that was shot at 24 frames per second. I hear of audio sync issues with 24fps in the AVCHD format, so was concerned about HDV recording at 24fps.
THANKS!

Hi garymcnally,
why would your customer shoot with 24fps?
Instead of 30fps.
Any reason?
For actual results of importing maybe Lou can help?

I never had a problem before in 24F. I only used it a few times, but I do not like the jerky look. I opt for 30F instead. If you use the camera to import HDV into your editing appliance, you will not have a problem.

If using a SONY HDV deck with CANON HDV, be careful. SONY will only read 24P. The XHA-1 utilizes a different field system and 24F can not be used in a SONY deck. ALSO, if using a SONY HDV deck in the FINISH area, make sure you set the CANON HDV footage to Swap Fields in the main menu of your editing system.

I would highly recommend using the CANON camera for BOTH importation and exportation purposes to play it safe. You do not have to adjust the fields in this case.

Truthfully, I like working with my HDV cameras over my AVCHD cameras. Visually, I can't tell the difference. I simply adjust the HDV gamma and saturation and I am in the "ballpark" when combining AVCHD and HDV. HDV renders so much faster than AVCHD. But that is my opinion.

Hans,
That was the same question I asked him.
He is toying with the idea of a film look for weddings.
Maybe the lower frame rate will mitigate the low light venues too?
Thanks for the reply Hans and Lou!

I personally tried 24p with my 5d Mark II HDSLR with my S-4100 & was not crazy with the "look".
I had major audio sync issues (that were fixable but a real nuisance).

When uploaded to youtube it looked fine but when viewed in real time
from the storyboard it looked jerky. I prefer 30p & love the results.

Agree here. I am not a big fan of 24P either. I am reviewing some of the Canon 7D material in 24P and I would rather use 60i and then use the Movie Mode that is part of the default software.
An advantage of 24p with the proper shutter speed is better lowlight capability at the expense of a jerky-looking picture-not to be confused with a LOW shutter speed look. However, some videographer's swear by 24P, coupled with a Cine mode in the camera.

Hi guys, I'm actually the guy that gary mcnally is talking about. I purchased the s4100 a little while back and have not switched to HD yet as there isnt a real demand for it in my area yet. So now I'm looking for the right cam to compliment the system. A little backward, but i'm left with no choice. Just want a cam that I can shoot HDV with (I'm old and like tape). the 30f and 24f vs 30p and 24p got me a little confused. not that i would actually use either one, but would like the option of utilizing all the functions of the cam if bogart will afford that chance. I was a prestige operater for almost a decade, and am finally moving up. The canon a1s looks like a great cam for the money, and I like the fact that it is HDV and sports the old CCD sensors. Looking for some opinions so I can purchase off of Gary soon. If there is a better cam (HDV) for same price perimeter, I would appreciate your input.... Thanks.
