Best Monitors for editing?

Maybe I am getting behind, but here we go. I use a Canon GL2 for video and edit in a Prestige with Smart Edit 3d but I am still using an older style TV displaying the standard 4 X 3 aspect ratio. So, one TV I tried to edit with on location looked like, SH_ _ so I made sure I gave the TV back to th loaner. It was a cheap flat screen TV I am sure from Walmart. So, what do I edit with today? I am going to the March Get Together to hopefully get some new ideas. Is that a good idea to go to it? Feedback is always helpful. Thank you

The problem probably was not the monitor you were using. The problem is pushing a SD signal into a HDTV. You need to send the signal out of the cassie and into an "upscaler" or "upconverter" and then into the the HDMI port of the TV to get a very nice picture. Expect to spend $300 - $400 to get the job done.

I also use a GL2 for video. I have been using an LED flat screen for several years (very much pre - HD), It has component, S-video and composite inputs. I connect the SOL to it via S-video, keep the aspect ratio in 4:3, and the picture is quite good. A couple of years ago I tried an HD TV. I had the same experience as you had - lousy image. So I went back to the SD flat screen TV. You should be able to use any SD TV with good results. But as Rone said, if you must use an HDTV, you will need an"upscaler". Keith

My only caution - if you are remaining in the 4:3 aspect ratio is to be aware that some of the contemporary wide-screen monitors do not represent this aspect ratio with precision. With the new emphasis on the 16:9 format, they may be less focused on that issue. So I would definitely test one with my own eyes with the format/s you'll be using, if possible.

Wow! You folks are a ton of help. Why did I not get on this thing years ago? Yes, I will be at the MGT and am already signed up and reserved. I hope my employer doesn't miss me for a few days!!!!! Here's another opinion. Since you are not yet into HD shooting and editing, a Sony PVM-14M4U high resolution monitor will give outstanding representation of what you have actually recorded. It has 800 lines of resolution selectable color temperature, underscan, blue only for accurate set up and is a 14 inch monitor.
Here is an example on ebay. http://tinyurl.com/4pgufex These monitors were well over $2000 each new. I have 4 of them in my studio. The main problem I have had is shipping. The CRT is so heavy that abusive handling will cause the CRT to came loose and destroy the monitor in transit. It is a 4:3 or 16:9 display but not high definition.
