It seems software corruption, is there any way to reinstall SmartEdit 7 without format my HD? Also I only have the serial number of my original SmartEdit 4, is there any way for extract my SmartEdit 7 serial for reinstall?

Yes, you can re-install Smart EDit V7 on the drive that currently has Smart Edit V7 on it. And provided you select the first install option, you should be able to effect the re-installation without deleting any projects. But you will need your code number for the software. As Tim quite rightly states, the number is stored in the bios of the machine. But the later versions of Smart Edit require you to input the number again in order to activate the install.

Contact the company that sold you Smart Edit V7. They should have a copy of the number (and so should you).

He said he has SE4 on it.

And once you input the activation code for any OS or software the system will remember it for forever, so no need for the code.

At school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I said “happy" and they told me I didn’t understand the question.

I may be wrong about this, but my understanding is that he wants to re-install SE V7 on a drive that currently has a corrupt SE V7 install on it.
If he installs from a SmartMedia Card, he will not need the code. But if he intends to install from a CD he will need it.

Greg,

Unless PAL systems are very different and I do not believe they are once an activation code is used in a VxWorks, Smart Edit based machine it is in there for good as it is retained somewhere in the motherboard bios and not the hard drive and never has to be re-input again.

This is true regardless of whether it's an OS activation code or optional software and does not matter whether you are loading the software by SM card or CD.

The same cannot be said for Linux based Bogart systems.

Hi Tim,

Since install CDs became available for download from the net, there were several instances of folks donwloading updated versions of Smart Edit without first purchasing the release code.
If they then tried to effect an install of the new version they could end up with a machine that would no longer boot off the old operating system and, of course, the install of the new OS could not proceed without the code.
I am not sure why it was no longer possible to boot off the old OS. Perhaps the new install disk updated the bios (or something similar). As far as I can remember, it was not possible to re-instal the old operating system without loss of projects.

So MacroSystem changed the system so that the end-user would need to show that they had the appropriate code number before proceeding. To ensure I hadn't got my wires crossed on this, I installed SE 7 to a Prestige yesterday.
I then used an install CD to try a re-install and the first thing it did was to ask for the registration number. I am not sure when this change occurred, but I think it may have started with SE 6.

Regards,

Greg

Greg is right. You do need the OS code again, but not all the other software codes.
